Synopsis
Geoffrey Wolfe (Herbert Marshall), a writer similar to Maugham, tells the story of Charles Strickland (George Sanders). A mediocre, seemingly unassuming London stockbroker, Strickland suddenly gives up his career, wife of 17 years (an uncredited Molly Lamont), and children and moves to Paris. Mrs. Strickland asks Wolfe to bring him back. To Wolfe's surprise, Strickland has not run away with another woman (as he had been told), but because Strickland feels compelled to become a painter. He exhibits no remorse or shame about abandoning his family and refuses to return to his old life, whereupon his wife divorces him. Despite his strong disapproval of Strickland's callous behavior, Wolfe is intrigued.Actors

Paris, en 1880. Georges Duroy retrouve un ami, journaliste politique à La Vie française, Charles Forestier. Ils dînent ensemble chez le directeur du journal, Monsieur Walter. Told in a segmented fashion, the film opens as Caravaggio (Nigel Terry) dies from lead poisoning while in exile, with only his long-time deaf-dumb companion Jerusaleme (Spencer Leigh) (who was given by his family to the artist as a boy) by his side. Caravaggio thinks back to his life as a teenage street ruffian (Dexter Fletcher) who hustles and paints. Dora Maar rencontre Picasso en 1935, elle a 28 ans et sa réputation de photographe avant-gardiste la précède. Lui a 54 ans et il est au sommet de sa carrière. Pendant 7 ans, Dora suit au plus près la vie du génie, notamment la création du "Guernica" qu’elle photographie dans toutes ses étapes successives. Puis arrive une nouvelle femme auprès de Picasso, Françoise Gillot. Dora se retire à Ménerbes dans le Vaucluse où elle apprendra la mort de Picasso.
