Munich 1942. Le groupe d'étudiants La Rose blanche, parmi lesquels Hans et Sophie Scholl, appellent par des tracts à la résistance à Hitler et son régime. C'est au risque de leur vie qu'ils apportent des tracts dans d'autres villes et écrivent de nuit sur les murs des slogans comme « À bas Hitler » (Nieder mit Hitler). Tandis que le piège de la Gestapo les enserre toujours plus étroitement, ils entrent en contact avec d'autres groupes de la résistance et même des officiers militaires supérieurs. Au début de 1943 la Gestapo frappe : Hans et Sophie Scholl sont arrêtés dans la cour de l'Université de Munich. Le tribunal du peuple (Volksgerichtshof) sous la présidence de Roland Freisler les condamne à mort. La sentence est exécutée le 22 février 1943.

Divorcé et au chômage depuis longtemps, Hans Scholz vit tout seul dans son appartement. Un jour, il découvre dans une poubelle au coin de la rue, un bébé abandonné qu'il baptise Felizia. Wolfgang Schmidt travaille comme graphiste publicitaire à La Maison de la publicité. Il est mauvais, mais il sait parler et a ainsi beaucoup de relations. Il passe son temps libre à commenter des matchs de football et voudrait en faire son métier. Siegfried Huster, de la grande entreprise Bureau Central des Petits Imprimés, cherche un nouvel employé pour le siège. Le dossier de Schmidt lui fait bonne impression et, bien que Kühn, la directrice de La Maison de la publicité, essaie de le convaindre de l'incapacité de Schmidt, il ne la croit pas et décide de le convoquer. Lors de sa poignée de main avec Huster, Schmidt la trouve si forte qu'il serre les dents et perd une incisive. Comme il a tendance à bégayer, il ne dit rien aux questions de Huster puis parle rapidement.
