Synopsis
Munich 1942. Le groupe d'étudiants La Rose blanche, parmi lesquels Hans et Sophie Scholl, appellent par des tracts à la résistance à Hitler et son régime. C'est au risque de leur vie qu'ils apportent des tracts dans d'autres villes et écrivent de nuit sur les murs des slogans comme « À bas Hitler » (Nieder mit Hitler). Tandis que le piège de la Gestapo les enserre toujours plus étroitement, ils entrent en contact avec d'autres groupes de la résistance et même des officiers militaires supérieurs. Au début de 1943 la Gestapo frappe : Hans et Sophie Scholl sont arrêtés dans la cour de l'Université de Munich. Le tribunal du peuple (Volksgerichtshof) sous la présidence de Roland Freisler les condamne à mort. La sentence est exécutée le 22 février 1943.Actors

The film begins in Nanking during late 1937, where German businessman John Rabe, director of the local Siemens subsidiary, and his wife Dora have resided for almost thirty years. The thought of transferring management to his successor Fliess and returning to Berlin is a substantial professional setback for him. In August 1942, a group of German soldiers enjoy leave in Cervo, Liguria, Italy after fighting in North Africa. An awards ceremony is held for several soldiers in the unit, where one platoon's new commander, Leutnant (Lieutenant) Hans von Witzland (Thomas Kretschmann) is introduced. Trois marins allemands naufragés, le lieutenant Düren, l'enseigne Stahmer et le Maat Hinze, sont sauvés par un sous-marin allemand. Après s'être avérés être les seuls survivants du naufrage du navire de guerre Pommern, ils sont d'abord célébrés en tant que héros et décorés. Cependant un enquêteur note des incohérences dans les rapports des trois et suppose la possibilité qu'ils ont délibérément quitté le navire par intérêt personnel. Un procès est annoncé avec l'accusation de désertion. En raison de cette union personnelle, eux et l'avocat de la défense des trois hommes, inexpérimenté en matière de juridiction militaire, n'obtiennent pas le rejet du procès qu'ils considèrent à charge dans le sens de la dénazification. Au début, les trois affirment leur innocence, mais à mesure qu’ils deviennent de plus en plus incohérents, ils concèdent un à un qu'ils ont quitté le navire prématurément. Ils affirment, en partie fortement émus, que tous leurs camarades étaient morts, rester sur le navire n’aurait entraîné qu'une mort inutile sans bénéfice pour autrui. Tous les trois sont condamnés à mort.

The movie portrays an attempt in 1936 to summit the Eiger via the north face by two competing climbing teams. The more prominently featured pair of German climbers are Toni Kurz (Fürmann) and Andi Hinterstoisser (Lukas) from Berchtesgaden. After being refused leave from the German army (falsely claiming one of them is getting married and the other is to be Best Man), they quit their service in order to make the attempt. They are portrayed as being more interested in mountaineering than in the current politics of the time. The competing team of Austrians that eventually teams up with the German team are portrayed as hoping for a Nazi-led incorporation of Austria into Germany. Watching their summit attempt is their childhood friend Luise (Wokalek), now working for a German newspaper, who is accompanied by her cynical superior Mr. Arau (Tukur).

The film Amen. examines the links between the Vatican and Nazi Germany. The central character is Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur), a Waffen-SS officer employed in the SS Hygiene Institute, designing programs for the purification of water and the destruction of vermin. He is shocked to learn that the process he has developed to eradicate typhus, by using a hydrogen cyanide mixture called Zyklon B, is now being used for killing Jews in extermination camps. Gerstein attempts to notify Pope Pius XII (Marcel Iureş) about the gassings, but is appalled by the lack of response he gets from the Catholic hierarchy. The only person moved is Riccardo Fontana (Mathieu Kassovitz), a young Jesuit priest. Fontana and Gerstein attempt to raise awareness about what is happening to the Jews in Europe but even after Fontana appealing to the pope himself, the Vatican makes only a timid and vague condemnation of Hitler and Nazi Germany.

On April 14, 1865, the Civil War ends with the North's victory. Lawyer, and Union veteran Frederick Aiken, with his friends, William Thomas Hamilton and Nicholas Baker, celebrate. Aiken and his girlfriend Sarah Weston decide to take a walk. Later that same night, Southerner Lewis Payne unsuccessfully attempts to kill Secretary of State William Seward, only seriously wounding him. German immigrant and carriage repair business owner George Atzerodt is assigned to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson but becomes afraid and runs away. Meanwhile, actor John Wilkes Booth, enters Ford's Theatre and sees his target, President Abraham Lincoln. Booth sneaks into the President's box and shoots Lincoln, mortally wounding him. Booth stabs diplomat and military officer Henry Rathbone who was a guest in Lincoln's box, and leaps onto the stage, shouting, "Sic Semper Tyrannis! The South is avenged!" before escaping. Everyone, including Aiken, Hamilton and Baker, watch in horror with the crowd as the unconscious President is taken to a nearby boarding house where he dies early the next morning.
