Hitler’s Children is a film about the descendants of some of the most powerful figures in the Nazi regime, such as Heinrich Himmler, Hans Frank, Hermann Göring, and Rudolf Höss, who have inherited a legacy that permanently associates them with one of the greatest crimes in history. For more than 60 years they lived in the shadows trying to rebuild their lives without the constant reminders of what their fathers and grandfathers once did.

Human Terrain has two narrative components. The first is an inquiry into the HTS program, which is based around footage of the directors' visits to the HTS training base at Fort Leavenworth and of interviews with HTS personnel, US Government officials, and academic commentators on the HTS program. The second is an account of Michael Bhatia's involvement in HTS, which centers around an exploration of his reasons for joining the program.

Malte's sister Barbel is shown defending her father and insisting that he could not have known the full truth about Auschwitz, that he tried to resist or subvert the Nazi's most inhumane policies, and that the victims of Auschwitz should be thought of as casualties of war. Malte also includes testimony from a member of a Jewish family in Slovakia whose house was expropriated by the Nazis in the early 1940s.
