Synopsis
Tout semble réussir à Christine Letellier. Tout, à un seul détail près : elle déteste son voisin, Jeff Wallace. Christine "Chris" Ramsey (Phoebe Cates) lies in bed narrating a trashy romance novel to Betsy (Kathleen Wilhoite), her roommate at the Cherryvale Academy for Girls. Meanwhile, three students of the nearby Freemount Academy for Men, including Jim Green (Matthew Modine) and his overweight, slobbish friend Bubba (Michael Zorek), sneak into Cherryvale to peek on the girls. Jordan Leigh-Jenson (Betsy Russell), showering at the time, sees that the boys are peering at her and enlists Chris and Betsy's help to drive them away; the three boys fall off the side of the building. In response to being disturbed, the roommates light a bag of feces on fire and put it in front of Jordan's door.

Anne-Marie Gratigny is the wife of a famous plastic surgeon, Gilbert. She has a good life, with maids, money, and everything ordinary women would dream of. But her marriage is a total failure. Her husband lives for his job and does not pay proper attention to Anne-Marie. As a result of years of neglect, Mrs. Gratigny has a lover named Leo, who works as a ship builder, and is urging Anne-Marie to leave her husband and this unbearable situation, and go with him to China, where he is seeking a big project for his work. However, after spending an entire day out, planning her departure, when Anne-Marie returns home, she is surprised to find the whole family there, with some very shocking news: Gilbert has died in a car accident. Relieved that her failed marriage is at an end, Anne-Marie now sees the chance to meet her lover more often, and is looking forward to being able to go to China with him, but all her hopes are dashed by the continuous presence of her family and in particular her son, who won't give her a break, thinking she's in shock because of losing her husband. She now has to pretend to be in mourning and hide her happiness and relief.

Rédactrice en chef du magazine Planète Luxe, Isabelle Delambre rencontre à l'aéroport de Paris un homme charmant, Max Ronsac. C'est le coup de foudre. Or ce dernier n'est autre que le propriétaire de l'hôtel marocain qu'elle s'apprête à assassiner dans ses pages. En effet, elle a rédigé un article incendiaire sur base des impressions de son adjoint qui a effectué un séjour dans l'établissement. Quelques jours plus tard, lorsqu'il découvre le reportage dans Planète Luxe, il est fou de rage. Bien entendu, Isabelle n'ose pas avouer qu'elle en est l'auteur. Elle n'a d'autre solution que de s'enfoncer chaque jour un peu plus dans le mensonge, et se retrouve carrément dans l'embarras quand elle apprend que Max veut attaquer le magazine pour diffamation.

Angela de Marco (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the wife of mafia up-and-comer Frank "The Cucumber" de Marco (Alec Baldwin), who gets violently dispatched by Mob boss Tony "The Tiger" Russo (Dean Stockwell) when he is discovered in a compromising situation with the latter's mistress Karen (Nancy Travis). Angela wants to escape the mafia scene with her son, but is harassed by Tony who puts the moves on her at Frank's funeral. This clinch earns her the suspicion of FBI agents Mike Downey (Matthew Modine) and Ed Benitez (Oliver Platt), and also of Tony's wife Connie (Mercedes Ruehl), who repeatedly confronts Angela with accusations of stealing her husband. To further complicate things, Mike Downey is assigned to monitor all of Angela's movements as part of an undercover surveillance operation, but cannot resist becoming romantically involved with Angela himself. Angela's attempts to break away from the Mob result in comic mayhem and a climactic showdown in a honeymoon suite in Miami.

Joe is an aspiring actor working as a bus boy in a high-class restaurant. His longtime girlfriend Mary works as a cosmetician for the fashion industry and largely supports him with her steady income.
