The Place Without Limits (Spanish: El lugar sin límites, also released as Hell Without Limits) is a 1978 Mexican drama film directed by Arturo Ripstein, produced in Mexico and based on the 1966 novel of the same name written by Chilean José Donoso. The film was selected as the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

Synopsis

La Manuela, un travesti homosexuel, et sa fille Japonesita, tiennent un bordel dans le petit village d'El Olivo, que le chef, Don Alejo, veut vendre. Pancho, l'ancien protégé du chef du village, revient à El Olivo. Ivre, Pancho révèle sa part d'homosexualité avec La Manuela.

En 1939, Lucha Reyes, chanteuse en vogue revenue d'Allemagne où elle avait eu des problèmes de voix, se produit dans un cabaret de Mexico. Là elle fréquente son ami Oñate un peintre politiquement de gauche, un allemand, Klaus Eder militant aussi à gauche qui a fui le fascisme hitlérien et surtout son amie, sa confidente et même davantage, Jaïra, qui vit de ses charmes. Elle retrouve aussi sa mère, Doña Victoria, très possessive, auprès de qui elle ne trouve guère d'affection ce dont elle a précisément bien besoin au point d'en être parfois extravagante.

Pepi cultive de la marijuana sur son balcon. Un flic qui habite en face, le remarque et vient chez elle pour le lui reprocher. Son regard est concupiscent si bien qu'elle soulève sa robe et lui propose de faire l'amour en échange de son silence. Le flic accepte. Elle lui précise toutefois qu'il doit passer par «derrière», ne voulant pas perdre sa virginité, qu'elle voulait monnayer pour 60 000 ptas, comme on l'apprendra plus tard. Le policier refuse et la pénètre. Il réalise en entendant ses cris que Pepi était réellement vierge. Celle-ci décide alors de se venger de ce viol avec l'aide de Bom et son groupe de musiciens, mais aussi celle de Luci, la femme masoschiste, mais abandonnée, du policier «qui la traite comme sa mère».

The plot is based on the arrival of Aunt Alejandra to a familiar household consisting of two parents and three children. Rejected by the eldest child, she only serves to bring misfortune to them since coming home. Auntie has a fortune that will surely help her relatives, but really begins to destroy the whole family with diabolical acts, and attempts to teach children witchcraft. When one of the children mocks her, she caused his death. When her nephew dismisses of his house, she chokes him in his own bed. When the older girl burns her face, Alejandra burns an entire room with the girl inside. Only surviving Lucía, the wife, and her young daughter, but she seems to have learned the secrets of Alejandra.
