Synopsis
John Ward peintre alcoolique légèrement à la dérive, subsiste en vendant ses toiles que les marchands d’arts lui achètent chichement. Le corps d'une jeune fille, Silvia Polvesi, est retrouvé pendu dans le grenier d'une maison d'un petit village de la province de Brescia. Les faits suggèrent d'abord un suicide. La police ouvre une enquête, d'abord conduite par le commissaire Silvestri puis par le commissaire Valentini, sous la coupe de la procureur adjointe Vittoria Stori. Les enquêteurs mettent à jour un réseau de prostitution de mineures impliquant de hauts politiques italiens et un scandale risque d'exploser. Luca Di Angelo (Fabio Testi) is a smuggler, one member of an organized team trafficking cigarettes and booze up and down the coast off Naples, Italy. After a run-in with the police in which the smugglers manage to get away by faking a boat explosion resulting in the police motorboats responding to the false emergency allowing the smugglers to get away, Luca and his brother Mickey suspect Scherino (Ferdinand Murolo), the head of a rival gang of smugglers, of passing on their actives. Lucia and Mickey take their accusations to their boss Perlante (Saverio Marconi) a sleazy playboy withy numerous Mafia connections, who agrees to look into it. After a nighttime fire at Mickey's racing stables kills a valued racehorse, he and Luca drive over to inspect the damage. But on the way, they are stopped at a fake police roadblock where the assassins dressed as policemen trick Mickey into getting out of the car and machine-gun him to death over and over again (a homage to Sonny Corelone's death scene in The Godfather), while Luca barely escapes injury by hiding on the floor of the car.

Baron von Rhoneberg (Jean Servais), a former World War II German general, sacrificed his daughter as the war ended. This condemned his family to be placed under a terrible curse. Many years later, he tells the story to a reporter who wishes to write an article about it and take pictures of his castle. However, the Baron is against any photographs. Despite his protests, the young woman goes up to visit the castle and take pictures but is killed when a dry thunderstorm suddenly rolls in while she is in close proximity to it. Her body is taken back to the town where it is discovered she has a burn in the shape of a lobster-like claw on her arm which is confirmed as the Mark of the Devil.

One of the more prominent works of Italy's premier horror stylist Mario Bava, this occult murder mystery interweaves elements of the traditional giallo thriller formula with an unusual Gothic ghost story. In a turn-of-the-century Carpathian village a series of murders are occurring in which the victims are found with silver coins embedded in their hearts. The coins are revealed to be talismans placed on the victims by the town witch (Fabienne Dali), meant to ward off the supernatural powers of the aged Baroness Graps (Giana Vivaldi). The baroness has been performing these duties for the ghost of her murdered daughter, who wants to claim the villagers' souls. In order to free the village from the curse, Dali must find the sequestered baroness and destroy her.
