Ce téléfilm sert de transition entre la série Mike Hammer (Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer) diffusée en 1984-1985 et la série Le Retour de Mike Hammer (The New Mike Hammer) diffusée en 1986-1987. Arrêté et condamné à la prison en Angleterre en 1984, Stacy Keach avait en effet dû mettre de côté son rôle le temps de purger sa peine.
Synopsis
Après une disparation inquiétante, le détective privé Mike Hammer (Stacy Keach) est chargé de la protection des acteurs pendant le tournage d’un film à New York. Malgré sa vigilance, une nouvelle victime disparaît et Hammer part alors à sa recherche dans une ville qui n’est pas la sienne...Actors

Mike is hired to protect Chris Jameson (Michelle Phillips), an old flame who he hasn't seen in almost 20 years. Young "Lord" Geoffrey Braemer (Freddie Bartholomew) is supposedly an English aristocrat. In fact, he is an orphan and willing accomplice to con artists Jim Hampstead (George Zucco) and Doris Clandon (Gale Sondergaard), who took him in when his parents died in a train wreck. He conveniently faints in a jewelry store, distracting the employees and allowing Jim to steal a valuable necklace. However, an astute insurance investigator catches him. He is sent to Russell-Cotes, a mercantile marine school, one of many vocational schools run by Dr. Barnardo's home for orphaned boys, with the warning that if he does not behave himself, he will be transferred to a reformatory.
