The film is based on the 1891 debut novel of the same name by the Swedish author and Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf. It is also known as Gosta Berling's Saga, The Story of Gosta Berling and The Atonement of Gosta Berling.
Synopsis
The priest Gosta Berling gets fired because of his inappropriate life style. He entertains a wealthy lady who in return supports him. Following a variety of occurrences he teams up with former duchess Dohna. Together they start over.Actors

In a remote place of Sweden, men working on the digging of a canal to dry up a marsh are housed in the nearby farms. In one of them live Johan and his mother together with a young girl, Marit. One of the workers tries unsuccessfully to kiss her. Some time later, while Johan is out floating timber on the other side of the river, he falls and crushes his leg. He lights a fire that Marit sees from the house. She crosses the river on a rowing boat and carries him back home and takes care of him. On his sick-bed, he asks her to be his wife. She accepts it quite unresponsively. Johan's mother is determined to avoid what she sees as a misalliance. He reminds her how 18 years before they had found her on the side of the road next to her dying mother. The mother orders Marit to leave the house but Johan, seeing the scene from his sick-bed orders her to stay and eventually marries her against his mother's will.

En 1914, la vie paisible de la ferme de Moreau est interrompue par la guerre. Son fils André rejoint l'armée, tandis qu'un camp de prisonniers de guerre est créé à la ferme, et sa fille Mona ne ressent que de la haine envers l'Allemagne. Oscar expose au salon un portrait d'Irma. Le comte remarque ce portrait et demande qui en est l'auteur et quelle est son adresse, pour l'acheter.

Lili et son amie assistent à une réunion à Stockholm où la suffragette anglaise Miss Spratt de Londres exalte l'enthousiasme de la petite troupe. Pendant ce temps, les hommes font la vaisselle et le ménage avec maladresse. Les suffragettes vont dans un local dont elles brisent les fenêtres à coups de haches, mais un incendie se propage dans le sous-sol. Elles sont effrayées par un couple de fantômes qui éteignent rapidement le feu ; en fait ce sont leurs maris qui se sont déguisés. En rentrant à la maison, Lili fait un horrible cauchemar avec des fenêtres brisées et sa propre décapitation.
