The Set-Up is a 1949 American film noir boxing drama directed by Robert Wise and starring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter. The screenplay was adapted by Art Cohn from a 1928 narrative poem written by Joseph Moncure March. The Set-Up was the last film Wise made for RKO, and he named it his favorite among the pictures he directed for the studio, as well as one of his top ten during his entire career.
Synopsis
Bill "Stoker" Thompson (Robert Ryan) is a 35-year-old has-been boxer about to take on an opponent at the fictional Paradise City Arena. His wife, Julie (Audrey Totter), fears that this fight may be his last and wants him to forfeit the match. Tiny (George Tobias), Stoker's manager, is sure he will continue to lose fights, so he takes money for a "dive" from a mobster, but is so certain of Stoker's failure that he does not inform the boxer of the set-up.Actors

Rocky Barbella (Paul Newman) grandit à New York à la fin des années 1930, au sein d'une bande de petits délinquants. Il fait plusieurs séjours en maison de correction. David Burke (Ed Begley) is a former policeman who was ruined when he refused to cooperate with state crime investigators. Harry Fabian (De Niro) is a fast-talking, two-bit New York lawyer who hangs out at a bar called Boxers, owned by Phil (Gorman) and his wife Helen (Lange). Harry has been having an affair with Helen, who dreams of setting up her own bar and leaving Phil. At the bar, he spots an article in the New York Post about a man who was pummeled by a boxer. He calls the man on Phil's phone and pitches a lawsuit against the boxer on the grounds that his fists are legally considered weapons.
