The Shadow , also known as The Circus Shadow, is a 1937 American mystery film, directed by Charles C. Coleman for Columbia Pictures. It stars Rita Hayworth, Charles Quigley and Marc Lawrence.

Synopsis

Mary Gillespie restaure le cirque du colonel Gillespie à sa splendeur d'antan après la mort de son père. Avec l'aide de son petit ami publiciste Jim, les foules à guichets fermés retournent au chapiteau. La star équestre égocentrique Senor Martinet détient cependant 60 000 $ de billets signés par le colonel et attendus dans 24 heures. Quand une mystérieuse silhouette ténébreuse est vue sur le terrain du cirque, et que Martinet est assassiné dans le ring du centre pendant sa performance, il y a de nombreux suspects, dont Vindecco, l'assistant bossu maltraité de Martinet.

Partenaires célèbres au trapèze, Hélène et Aldo le sont également à la ville. Aldo, rongé par le remords, avoue à Hélène qu'il a tué accidentellement un homme, Jim Brunot, son ancien partenaire. L'arrivée d'Alexandre, venu remplacer Aldo blessé, va davantage faire ressurgir le passé du trapéziste. Un soir, après une altercation entre les deux hommes, Alexandre est retrouvé mort. Hélène est persuadée de la culpabilité d'Aldo, mais par amour, elle laisse condamner Louis Bernardin, le dresseur de chiens. Au moment de l'exécution de ce dernier, à bout de nerfs, elle révèle tout le passé d'Aldo au commissaire Chardin. Entre-temps Bernardin a fait des aveux complets. Innocenté, Aldo repart avec Hélène. Au commissariat, l'inspecteur Chardin rouvre le dossier Jim Brunot.

In ruined Berlin, several bands of abandoned children roam the streets, engaging in petty crimes. When a circus arrives nearby, the boys are charmed by one Trapeze performer called Corona. They are upset when the circus' manager insults her, and plan a revenge by setting a trap on the ring. But their scheme fails and it is Corona that is injured. Being unable to work, she is dismissed.
