Add to a movie listThe Silver Streak is a 1934 film loosely based on the record-setting "dawn-to-dusk" run of the Pioneer Zephyr on May 26, 1934. The original Zephyr trainset was used for the exterior shots in the film, while interior scenes were filmed on a sound stage in Hollywood. For the film, the "Burlington Route" nameplate on the train's nose was replaced with one that read "Silver Streak".
One of the movie's promotional items was a small book called "The Story of the Silver Streak" which was illustrated with black and white stills from the movie.
In 2006 Con-Cor International, Ltd. produced a model of the Pioneer Zephyr. A limited number (350 HO scale and 250 N scale) of these bore the nameplates of the Silver Streak from the motion picture instead of the standard Burlington Route nameplates.
Synopsis
In the face of seriously declining railroad passenger travel, engineer Tom Caldwell presents to the president of the CB&D Railroad, B.J. Dexter, a design for a revolutionary diesel-electric train that will increase efficiency and lower costs. Dexter opposes change, however, and the railroad's conservative board of directors agrees with him, rejecting Tom's design. Tom quits in frustration. Sure that Tom's theory is sound, Dexter's daughter Ruth convinces Ed Tyler, a locomotive manufacturer, to look into Tom's design. Tyler is impressed with the concept and initiates immediate construction of a prototype. Soon Tom and his team prepare the Silver Streak for a well-publicized trial run with Dexter and Ruth aboard as passengers.Actors

The film is set on the coasts of Newfoundland and focuses on the rivalry between a seal hunter and a local jinx. Worried that the jinx may attempt to steal his girlfriend, the seal-hunter forces the alleged coward to accompany him on an Arctic expedition. The film portrays two conflicts that take place around Flagstone, a fictional town in the American Old West: a land battle related to construction of a railroad, and a mission of vengeance against a cold-blooded killer. A struggle exists for Sweetwater, a piece of land near Flagstone containing the region's only water source. The land was bought by Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), who foresaw that the railroad would have to pass through that area to provide water for the steam locomotives. When crippled railroad tycoon Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) learns of this, he sends his hired gun Frank (Henry Fonda) to intimidate McBain to move off the land, but Frank instead kills McBain and his three children, planting evidence to frame the bandit Cheyenne (Jason Robards). It appears the land has no owner; however, a former prostitute (Claudia Cardinale) arrives from New Orleans, revealing she is Jill McBain, Brett's new wife and the owner of the land.

Because of the copious amounts of large buildings in the center of Moscow, the Moscow subway tunnel, built in 1935, is starting to fail as it cannot withstand the resulting weight. One tunnel night crawler, Sergeitch (Sergey Sosnowski), sees a small leak in the roof of the tunnel (in the place where the tunnel runs under the Moscow River) and informs the assistant station (Michael Fateev), but he says that it is only groundwater and mocks the old man for worrying about it. Meanwhile, Irina Garin (Svetlana Hodchenkova) is torn between her lover - businessman Vlad Konstantinov (Anatoly Bely) - and her husband - a district hospital surgeon Andrei (Sergei Puskepalis) - with their daughter Ksenya (Anfisa Wistinghausen). Konstantinov believes that she is no match for Andrei, and tries to persuade her to divorce him. Arriving from Zagranpoezdki, she spends the night with Konstantinov and doesn't have time to come home in the morning. Andrei has to take his daughter Ksenya to school but by chance, they cannot go by car and walk to the metro station "Garden". Simultaneously, Konstantinov arrives, hurrying to work, but forced to give up the car because of traffic jams. Meanwhile Sergeitch, drinking with casual acquaintance Galina (Elena Panova) next to the "Garden", recalls that the water leaking into the tunnel smelled of slime, which means that it can not be groundwater. They are detained by the police for drinking alcohol in a public place, but manage to escape, and Galina flees into the subway. Sergeitch phones his employers to inform all the dispatchers but police turn a deaf ear to his request.

An earthquake strikes the city of Los Angeles. Mike Roark (Tommy Lee Jones), the head of the city's Office of Emergency Management, insists on coming to work to help out with the crisis, even though he has taken a vacation with his daughter Kelly (Gaby Hoffmann). His associate Emmit Reese (Don Cheadle) notes the quake caused no major damage, but seven utility workers are later burned to death in a storm drain, one escaped and survived but was severely burned on one side of his face at MacArthur Park. As a precaution, Roark tries to halt the subway lines which run parallel to where the deaths took place, but Los Angeles MTA Chairman Stan Olber (John Carroll Lynch) declines, feeling there is no threat to the trains. Against regulations, Roark and a colleague Gator Harris (Michael Rispoli) venture down the storm sewer in the park to investigate. They are nearly burned to death when hot gases suddenly spew out of a crack in the concrete lining and flood the tunnel. Geologist Dr. Amy Barnes (Anne Heche) believes a volcano may be rapidly forming beneath the city with magma flowing underground (similar to the formation of the Mexican volcano Parícutin which emerged and grew tremendously in just one week) but cannot come up with enough evidence for Roark to take action.
