The State I Am In (German: Die innere Sicherheit) is a 2000 German drama film directed by Christian Petzold. It tells the story of two german ex-terrorists and their teenage daughter, living in hiding in Portugal.
Synopsis
Hans et Clara, qui ont fui le pays depuis longtemps en tant qu'anciens terroristes d'extrême gauche, sont sur le point de quitter le Portugal pour le Brésil, dans l'espoir de tout recommencer. C'est important pour leur fille de 15 ans, Jeanne, qui aspire à une vie normale, cherche de plus en plus de contacts avec ses pairs, échappe au contrôle parental et devient un risque pour la sécurité du couple. La confrontation avec la police après un cambriolage dans leur chambre d'hôtel, où leur argent est volé, force toutefois la famille à fuir à nouveau et à retourner temporairement en Allemagne. Ils trouvent refuge dans une villa vacante à Hambourg. Jeanne retrouve Heinrich, surfeur allemand au Portugal, non loin de la villa d'abord par hasard, puis le fréquente secrètement.Actors

East Germany in 1980: Barbara (Nina Hoss) is a chain-smoking physician whom we meet as she is arriving for her first day at a small rural hospital near the Baltic Sea. She had been at the prestigious Charité hospital in East Berlin but, after she'd filed an "Ausreiseantrag" – an official request to leave East Germany – she had been incarcerated and then transferred to this small town where she is still monitored by the Stasi. Twice in the film, we see the Stasi punish Barbara for the hours in which they cannot find her, by searching her house, strip-searching and cavity-searching her.

Traude Krueger (Bleibtreu) is working as a piano teacher in a women's prison. While selecting new students, she meets Jenny Von Loeben (Herzsprung). When she tells her she can't take any lessons because her hands are too rough and she is uncooperative, Jenny becomes enraged and almost kills the prison guard, Mütze (Pippig), also one of Krueger's students. Then she starts playing the piano. Krueger listens from the hallway and, impressed by her talent, later offers Jenny lessons, but requires absolute obedience, including eating a sheet of paper. She tells Jenny never to play 'that kind of negro-music' again.
