The Sun Behind the Clouds looks at China's occupation of Tibet from the perspective of the vocally secessionist Tibetan youth, and from that of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, whose reaction to the Chinese presence has been markedly less confrontational. Directed by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam, the film features interviews with the Dalai Lama and Tenzin Tsundue. The Sun Behind the Clouds premiered in the United States at the 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival before playing at Film Forum in New York City.

The film covers the 2008 Tibetan unrest, including Buddhists' protests in Lhasa and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ce film fait le point sur la situation après 50 années d'un combat pour la liberté des Tibétains, depuis le Soulèvement tibétain de 1959 du 10 mars 1959. Cet évènement fut la cause du départ du 14e dalaï-lama du Tibet fuyant pour échapper à une possible arrestation par l'administration de la République populaire de Chine. Le film présente ses responsabilités en tant que chef spirituel et leader politique et traite des enjeux géopolitiques du Tibet. Le manque de perspective pour le peuple tibétain provoquant des « mécontentements y compris parmi ses plus fidèles ».

Karma, a young Tibetan woman from New York City comes to Dharamsala, the exile headquarters of the Dalai Lama in India, in search of her roots. She is making a documentary film about former political prisoners who have escaped from Tibet. One of her interviewees is the recently arrived Dhondup.
