The Third Eye is a 1920 American film serial directed by James W. Horne. The film is considered to be lost.

Synopsis

As described in a film publication, Curtis Steele (Oland), a society man at a film studio, has been pursuing actress Rita Moreland (Percy) and confronts her at the studio with the intention of making love to her. She repulses him and during the struggle shoots him. Steele staggers forward and collapses. She is terrified as she thought that the revolver had been loaded with blanks. As she bends over him, he leaps to his feet and with a sneering remark leaves. Later that night Rita is informed that Steele was found at the studio shot through the heart, and that there is a film showing Steel chasing her and then her shooting him. The serial then develops around Rita, her sweetheart, a villain, and the mystery of who killed Steele, who made the film, and attempts to obtain the film.

White Eagle, a Pony Express Rider, is the son of a massacred Army officer who has been raised by an Indian tribe. He believes himself to be the son of the tribal chief, and is working to get a peace treaty signed between the Indians and the white settlers. But 'Dandy' Darnell, a notorious and merciless outlaw, tries to keep the fight alive by sending his henchmen to stir up trouble, partly due to his wish to grab hundreds of thousands of acres in the western territories for himself and also to incite a war with the Indians along the territory. A murderous gang of counterfeiters has kidnapped John Severn, the U.S. government's best engraver, who is being held against his will and is forced to print virtually undetectable phony cash. The Secret Service sends its toughest agent, Jack Holt, and his female partner Kay Drew after the gang. Holt and his boss Malloy decide to try to pass Holt off as escaped tough guy, Nick Farrel. Masquerading as Mr. and Mrs. Farrel, Holt and Drew manage to infiltrate the ruthless gang of thugs and the tough talk and action never stops from there on. Holt's hunches lead him to the culprits and into trouble on a canoe ride and in an outlaw camp, as the action moves from the gang's hideout in a lost canyon to a gambling ship on the high seas to a small island country where the gang hopes to escape U.S. extradition. The brains heavy is a man named Lucky Arnold but he hides behind the facade of one of his loyal henchmen, Quist, to shield himself from the Secret Service, and lets another one of his men, Valden, do most of his dirty work. The island nation has its own pocket dictator who is also trying to rub out our hero. During the 15 episodes, Holt endures numerous brushes with death, emerging from all of them with nary a hair out of place nor a crease in his well-tailored business suit.

The film opens in the trenches of World War I where Ollie, Stan and the rest of their army company are ready to go 'over the top', but Stan is ordered to stay behind to guard the trench. Stock scenes of fighting are then seen followed by the caption 'Armistice'. Twenty years pass, and Stan is still guarding the post, as shown by the huge pile of bean cans he has accumulated, and the path he has worn pacing back and forth on guard. He is found by accident (after firing on a plane he sees approaching) and is brought home, feted as a hero. Ollie, who has been married for a year to the formidable Mrs. Hardy (Minna Gombell), sees him in a newspaper and visits him in the veterans' home. He finds Stan in a wheelchair, having apparently lost a leg, and invites him home. However, Stan is in fact just resting in another veteran's wheelchair and Ollie only finds out he still has both legs after pushing him around in the chair and then carrying him. Ollie, angrily: "Why didn't you tell me you had two legs?" Stan: "Well, you didn't ask me." They reach Ollie's automobile, which he says belongs to his wife and is 'practically new', but it is boxed in by a dump truck. Stan climbs into the cab to move it and inadvertently operates the dump mechanism, burying the car in sand and leaving only Ollie's head exposed. It is then completely wrecked when Ollie demonstrates the automatic garage door at his home and allows Stan to drive the car in to test it.
