Different from You and Me (§175) centers around the well-to-do Teichmann family in Berlin. Klaus, the 17-year-old son of Werner and Christa Teichmann, has begun to lead a life that increasingly worries his parents. Although he is an outstanding student, Klaus spends most of his free time with Manfred, a low academic achiever raised by a relatively poor single mother. The two boys share an interest in the arts, and Manfred has just published a poem in the local newspaper. Klaus has to protect Manfred from classroom bullies who attack him for his effeteness.

Elisabeth (Kristina Söderbaum) falls in love with Reinhardt (Carl Raddatz), but he leaves their native village to study music, travel the world and build his career as a composer. His most important compositions are inspired by his love for her, Twelve Songs of Elisabeth and Seerosen (water lilies, the couple's special flower), but after she visits him on the day of his final examination at the conservatoire and finds a strange woman asleep in his bed, Elisabeth marries Erich (Paul Klinger), the wealthy heir to the estate of Immensee. Reinhardt returns to win her back, and Erich releases her, telling her that all that he wants is for her to be happy. This causes Elisabeth to realise what love really means and she tells Erich for the first time that she loves him, and remains with him. In the frame story, many years have passed, Erich is dead and Elisabeth and Reinhardt, who is now a renowned composer, meet for tea at his hotel after a performance of his Seerosen; at the end of the film, she tells him she will remain true to Erich and to Immensee, and he leaves for the last time.

Le meneur de la revue, Alexander Korty, aurait eu de nombreuses aventures dont les magazines font régulièrement rapport. Lui-même a du mal à convaincre sa femme Gertie de sa loyauté, mais il est en fait surveillé en permanence par son employée, M Sauerbier. Chez Korty, son attaché de presse, Otto Schräge, doit toujours recevoir la visite des dames. Quand la nouvelle chanteuse de Korty, Lilian Amado, demande à Korty de répéter les chansons de la revue, Otto se rend à l'hôtel avec son ami Fritz, où il rencontre la jolie Topsy Müller au kiosque à journaux. Elle le prend pour Alexander Korty et danse. Son père, Blasius, n'est pas ravi des ambitions de sa fille et lorsqu'il voit qu'Otto embrasse Topsy, ses pires craintes concernant la revue se confirment. Il expulse Otto et écrit une lettre à Alexander Korty dans laquelle il lui refuse sa fille de quelque manière que ce soit.
