Synopsis
Riley et Donovan, des propriétaires de chevaux de course, cherchent tous les deux à se lier d'amitié avec Tod Taylor, un jockey. Tod choisit finalement de travailler pour Riley, et gagne de plus en plus de courses. Colleen, la fille de Riley, sympathise avec Tod mais ce dernier tombe sous le charme de Margie, qui travaille pour le compte de Drake, un parieur. Tod en arrive au point où on lui propose de rater exprès sa course pour éviter la prison. Néanmoins Tod gagne la course et, lorsqu'il est arrêté, Riley qui a eu vent de l'affaire rembourse ses dettes et il est libéré.Actors

In the spring of 1939 in England, Oxford University professor Richard Myles (Fred MacMurray) and his new bride Frances (Joan Crawford) decide to honeymoon on the continent. Because they are American tourists and therefore "above suspicion," they find themselves commissioned by the British secret service to find an apparently missing scientist who has developed a countermeasure against a new Nazi secret weapon, a magnetic sea mine. Lorsque Lord Peter Wimsey, un détective amateur, se marie avec Harriet Vane, une écrivain spécialisée dans les romans policiers, ils s'engagent à abandonner le crime pour de bon. Lazy fisherman Bill Johansen (Wallace Beery) docks his small (and sinking) fishing boat in San Pedro harbor, aggravating ship chandler Pop Cavendish (Donald Meek) and Pop's spinster daughter Marge (Marjorie Main), who would like to marry Bill even though he has welched on paying his debts for years. Pop tries to have Bill's boat attached, but cannot because Bill has craftily listed the boat's ownership in the name of his daughter Virginia, whom he has not seen since she was a baby. Meanwhile, reefer ship-owner John Kelly (Barton MacLane) has a monopoly and intimidates local fishermen into accepting less than market value for their fish. Marge tells Bill he is just the man to stand up to Kelly, but Bill would rather fish for swordfish, which bring a higher price (and thus require less work to earn beer money) with his partner, Pico (Leo Carrillo). His daughter Virginia (Virginia Weidler), now twelve, is brought to meet Bill by her Aunt Letty (Sara Haden) and asks to stay with him, even though Letty thinks he is an unfit father. Bill likes Virginia, but doesn't want the responsibility of raising a child, so he convinces Marge to let her live ashore with her.
