Edward Środoń, an unemployed zootechnician from Mosty with a dark past and a growing drinking problem, tries to start over with a clean slate. He sets out to the Bieszczady Mountains to take up a job there at the local State Agricultural Farm. A twist of events makes him stop over for the night at the house of the Dziabas family. The initial feelings of mutual distrust between the guest and his hosts are softened with consecutive rounds of moonshine. Środoń slowly learns more about the family and its own problems. The unfolding story is intertwined with a parallel one which sees Środoń four years later, during martial law in Poland, taking part in a reenactment of the events that took place at the Dziabas house during his visit. The reenactment is led by Lieutenant Mróz from the Civic Militia who is slowly unveiling the truth about what happened four years before, at the same time being troubled by ghosts of his own past.

After opening with a brief, seemingly irrelevant scene of a suitcase on an airport carousel, the story quickly focuses on a Paris divorce court where Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is pleading with the judge — the same legal proceedings that Juliette Binoche's character briefly stumbled upon in Blue. The immigrant Karol, despite his difficulty in understanding French, is made to understand that his wife Dominique (Julie Delpy) does not love him. The grounds for divorce are humiliating: Karol was unable to consummate the marriage. Along with his wife, he loses his means of support (a beauty salon they jointly owned), his legal residency in France, and the rest of his cash in a series of mishaps, and is soon a beggar. He only retains a 2 franc coin.

When she returns in the company of her handsome music teacher, Armand Duvalle (Alexander D'Arcy), Jerry learns that Lucy spent the night in the country with Armand, after his car, they claim, broke down unexpectedly. Lucy then discovers that Jerry did not actually go to Florida, though he went so far as to get an artificial tan and write multiple fake letters home to convince her that he did. Mutual suspicions result in divorce.
