It is a remake of Arnold Fanck's 1929 film The White Hell of Pitz Palu. A young American couple accompany a veteran mountaineer on a dangerous climb in the Swiss Alps.

In 1993, Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is a guide at an Antarctica research base under contract with the National Science Foundation.
