Synopsis
Afrique du sud, montagnes du Cap Oriental. Comme tous les ans, Xolani, ouvrier solitaire, participe avec d’autres hommes de sa communauté aux cérémonies rituelles d’initiation d’une dizaine d’adolescents. L'un d'eux, venu de Johannesburg, découvre un secret précieusement gardé… Toute l’existence de Xolani menace alors de basculer.Comments

The film opens with Lígia, a barmaid who is fed up with her grueling routine and who is forced to routinely turn down the sexual propositions of the bar's customers. One of the men who hits on Lígia is Isaac, a necrophiliac who enjoys sodomizing corpses and drinking their blood. He lives at the Texas Hotel, where Dunga, a gay man, works as a handyman. Dunga is attracted to Wellington, a butcher who delivers meat to the hotel. Wellington, however, is married to Kika, a woman who is proud to be an evangelical Christian. However, Wellington cheats on his wife with a woman named Dayse. Dayse tires of being Wellington's mistress and tells Dunga about the relationship.

Naoya vit sa vie d'homosexuel, replié sur lui-même, accompagné par ce sentiment étrange que quelque chose manque à sa vie. Par hasard, il rencontre Katsuhiro et en tombe immédiatement amoureux. Tous deux commencent à se fréquenter quand apparaît Asako, une jeune femme qui propose à Katsuhiro de faire un enfant. Naoya, ne pouvant envisager une telle chose, est agacé par Katsuhiro, par son caractère indécis et la façon dont il dissimule son homosexualité. Le frère de Katsuhiro et sa belle-sœur choisissent ce moment difficile pour leur rendre visite. Cette dernière est en effet préoccupée par le risque de dispersion des biens de la famille : elle connaît le passé d'Asako et cherche à mettre un terme à sa relation avec Katsuhiro.

On the Downlow is a love story set in Little Village, Chicago, between Angel (Michael Cortez) and Isaac (Tony Sancho), two warmly human, supportive, sensitive young men. Their affection to each other is shown in a long kiss in a dark alley in Chicago, and later on, in a musical sequence in the film. The story revolves around a young man from the planet Mars, who is known as E.T., who arrives on Earth totally naked, and soon befriends a young Chinese man, Xiao Bo, who takes him home and teaches him several languages, mathematics, geography, world history, art and the natural sciences. A teenage boy, Ray, returns home from a life with his grandfather to live with his father after they have been estranged for several years. During the period of their estrangement, Ray spent much of his youth rebelling against his father's lifestyle. After he enrolls in art school, Ray becomes romantically involved in a relationship with another male student, and the pair soon become lovers. His father discovers the two young men in bed together, and begins to understand what it really means to be homosexual. Ray then meets one of his father's employees, Bo, and falls in love with him, too. Bo is engaged, and admits to Ray's father that he is in love with his son. The father fires Bo and lies to Ray that he left on his own will. The doesn't accept his father's argument. The film ends with ray roaming on terrace with floating transparent images of his childhood pictures.

The story may not be linear and exhibits several instances of temporal disruption. A dark-haired woman (Harring) escapes her own murder, surviving a car accident on Mulholland Drive. Injured and in shock, she descends into Los Angeles and sneaks into an apartment which an older, red-headed woman has just vacated. An aspiring actress named Betty Elms (Watts) arrives at the same apartment and finds the dark-haired woman confused, not knowing her own name. The dark-haired woman assumes the name "Rita" after seeing a poster for the film Gilda (1946), starring Rita Hayworth. To help Rita remember her identity, Betty looks in Rita's purse, where she finds a large amount of money and an unusual blue key.
