Synopsis

Júlia (Ana Paula Arósio) is a professor of English literature who is abandoned by her girlfriend after a relationship that lasted over ten years. Because of the separation, Júlia moves to Rio de Janeiro and lives with her best friend, Hugo (Murilo Rosa), who is gay, and Lisa (Natália Lage). In the new work, Júlia ends up attracting the interest a student, and of Helena (Arieta Corrêa), a woman she meets by chance and who is after the teacher, although she des not feel prepared for a new relationship.

In 1944 in the Republic of Salò, the Fascist-occupied portion of Italy, four wealthy men of power, the Duke, the Bishop, the Magistrate, and the President, agree to marry each other's daughters as the first step in a debauched ritual. They recruit four teenage boys to act as guards and four young soldiers (called "studs", "cockmongers", or "fuckers"), who are chosen because of their big penises. They then kidnap nine young men and nine young women and take them to a palace near Salò. Accompanying them are four middle-aged prostitutes, also collaborators, who recount arousing stories for the men, who sadistically exploit their victims.

Laila (Kalki Koechelin) is a wheelchair bound teenager with cerebral palsy. She also meets the fiery young activist Khanum (Sayani Gupta), a blind girl of a Pakistani and Bangladeshi descent, whom she later falls in love with. As she embarks on a journey of sexual discovery, she figures out she is bisexual, as she still feels attracted to men like Jared in spite of being with Khanum. Laila's mother believing the two are like best friends and oblivious to the fact that Khanum is her daughter's lover, invites her to Delhi to spend the winter break with the family. It is during that time that Laila finally finds the courage to tell her mother about her sexuality and her actual relationship with Khanum, which her mother initially disapproves. After a short while Laila's mother falls sick and she learns that her mother had fourth stage colon cancer which has fallen into relapse after previous treatments. Later Laila and her mother patch up and come to terms with each other. After her mother dies Laila plays a recorded speech at her mother's funeral telling how much she loved her and how she was the only one who ever understood her. The story ends with Laila going on a date, with herself, signifying that she now has taken control of her life and doesn't need anyone else to love and care for her.
