The Wrecker (German: Der Würger) is a 1929 British-German silent crime film directed by Géza von Bolváry and starring Carlyle Blackwell, Joseph Striker and Benita Hume. The film was based on the play of the same title by Arnold Ridley. It was produced by Michael Balcon for Gainsborough Pictures in a co-production with the German firm Felsom Film.

Synopsis

A criminal referred to by the press as "The Wrecker" is orchestrating accidents on Britain's railways. One such accident occurs on the (fictional) United Coast Lines Railway, whose train is carrying Roger Doyle (Joseph Striker), who has retired from Cricket to work on the railway. Roger survives, and reports the accident to his uncle, Sir Gerald Bartlett (Winter Hall), the managing director of the railway, and his assistant, the sly Ambrose Barney (Carlyle Blackwell). Unbeknownst to them, Ambrose is The Wrecker, and is also the head of the Kyle Motor-Coach Company, whose buses are introduced on services where The Wrecker has struck, hoping to frighten passengers off of the trains and onto buses. When Sir Gerald becomes suspicious of Ambrose following yet another accident, he is shot dead.

Based upon a review in a film magazine, Jimmy Valentine (Lytell), a prisoner in Sing Sing for safe-cracking, although guilty, maintains his innocence. When he obtains a pardon, he goes straight, influenced by a beautiful girl (Vale). He assumes a new identity as Lee Randall and diligently works at a bank for three years. When he is about to get married, Detective Doyle comes to town with proof of Valentine's guilt. However, the Randall identity is complete, and just as the detective is convinced and about to leave, word comes that a little girl is trapped in the bank safe and no one has the combination. Although the detective is nearby, Valentine uses his skills to open the safe, knowing that it will give away his identity. After the girl is rescued, the detective decides to leave without arresting Valentine.

Lady Winifred se marie secrètement à Michael Wain, un garde-chasse. Il rachète les hypothèques qui pèsent sur le manoir des Altcar et est sur le point de les faire expulser lorsqu'il apprend que Dora, la fille de Winifred qui avait élevée dans un couvent, est fiancée à un artiste américain, John Gillespie, mais que le même Lord Burford cherche à l'épouser comme il l'avait voulu pour sa mère. Pour détruire l'amour que Dora porte à John, Burford fait attacher un nu à la place du portrait que John faisait de Dora. Le cœur brisé, Dora s'enfuit dans son couvent dans les Alpes, ce qui a pour conséquence de rapprocher Lord Altcar et Lady Winifred. Burford, qui a découvert où se cache Dora, tente de la faire enlever, mais sa famille arrive à la rescousse.
