Synopsis
Rajinikanth is an auto mechanic and brother of Vijayakumar who works in Jaishankar's estate as a clerk. The movie portrays the events dealing with the clash between Rajini and Jaishankar. The movie centers around the life of Vani (Latha), a middle-class woman who lives with her brother, his wife and their chirpy teenage daughter Vasanthi (Subhashini). Victor (Nagesh), a mechanic, is their family friend. Victor introduces Vasu (Vijayakumar) to Vaani's family when they are looking for a tenant and Vasu moves into the top portion of their house. Vasu is deeply in love with Vani but is disappointed to find that Vani is already romantically involved with Venu (Jaiganesh). However, Venu turns out to be lecherous and deceitful and he vanishes from Vani's life after being physically intimate with her one night after a party.

The film opens with the birth of Baba (Rajinikanth), who is a 'baba amsa sambhootudu'. Baba grows up as an atheist, hot-blooded man but a Good Samaritan. His life style includes consuming alcohol, smoking substances, chewing tobacco. His mother (Sujatha) and his maternal uncle (M. N. Nambiar) are ardent devotees of Mahavatar Babaji (the Baba who is supposed to be of 2000 years old and who live in Himalayas). Chamundeswari (Manisha Koirala) stays in the neighborhood of Baba's residence who often quarrels with baba but eventually falls in love with his style and falls for his attitude.

Rajasekaran (Major Sundarrajan) is a rich man who is in possession of an antique sword that holds the key to a treasure. Nagalingam (Thengai Srinivasan), a criminal, makes several unsuccessful attempts to steal the sword from Rajasekaran. On one such attempts Anand (Jaishankar) saves Rajasekaran and becomes his trusted guy to protect the sword. Raju(Rajnikanth), an orphan who is being raised by an alcoholic, ex-thief Rajasingam (M.N Nambiar), is an expert in boosting cars and Anita (##Anita Raj) is his love interest. Several years back Rajasingam had stolen a car owned by Nagalingam with a child inside without knowing that the car and the child (Raju) actually belonged to Rajasekaran. One day Rajasingam spots Nagalingam in a shopping complex and believing that Raju is the son of Nagalingam, he hands Raju to him as his own son. Nagalingam deceitfully accepts Raju as his son and cleverly employs him to steal the sword from Rajasekaran, his real father. While Raju attempts to steal the sword, Anand keeps thwarting him. Despite Anand's efforts Raju manages to loot the sword but then discovers that he's actually the son of Rajasekaran and he himself had been instrumental in stealing his own family treasure for the wrong men. With the help of Anand, Raju fights with Nagalingam's gang to successfully retrieve their family treasure and reunites with his family.

Prabhu (Kamal Haasan) is brought up by Murali's (Rajinikanth) mother and is the General Manager for Murali's marketing agency at Chennai. Murali treats Prabhu not just as a friend, but as a brother and depends on him for all business decisions. Prabhu is in love with Padma (Sripriya), a college student.
