Thundering Dawn is an American silent film directed and produced by Harry Garson. The story was originally written by John Blackwood and was adapted by Universal City scenario editor, Raymond L. Schrock. Lenore Coffee and John Goodrich are also credited for working on the screenplay. The film stars J. Warren Kerrigan, Anna Q. Nilsson, and Thomas Santschi. It was released on November 5, 1923. Before settling on Thundering Dawn, the film had two working titles; Havoc and The Bond of the Ring.

Synopsis

A young man by the name of Jack Standish, played by J. Warren Kerrigan, disappears on the eve of his marriage after the discovery of a financial scandal involving his father, John Standish, played by Winter Hall. In order to protect his father from public disgrace, Jack suddenly flees Boston and thus takes the fall. The young Bostonian ends up fleeing to Java and inevitably succumbs to the lure of the tropics. Months later, his fiance, Mary Rogers, played by Anna Q. Nilsson, follows him to Java in hopes of bringing him home. Once Mary finds him, she is faced with the challenge of reviving him, both mentally and physically. Her task becomes more difficult when a native by the name of Lullaby Lou, played by Winifred Bryson, and a Dutch trader by the name of Gordon Van Brock, played by Thomas Santschi, try to interfere with the couple. Mary and Jack are able to escape when a tropical storm hits and spawns a typhoon that destroys the coastal settlement.

A nun at the convent, Janet Trevor plans to save her sister Lucy's life who's been framed for murder by switching places with her. As she steps into the cabaret spotlight, which is where her sister works, she discovers a possible victim: John McBride, a politician loved by both. Meanwhile, restaurant entrepreneur Allan Graves, threatens McBride and accuses Janet, who mistakes her for Lucy, of having been a witness to the murder that John is accused of. Confessing to the crime is a hunchback named Ramez, but not until the deception of the girls is made public. Graves refuses this offer and accuses Lucy of being a drug addict. Though she confesses to the sin, she denies that neither she nor McBride were involved in the murder. It is soon revealed the victim wasn't murdered at all, but rather bribed to leave the country so that Graves could get McBride in his position. After the presenting of the evidence, Mcbride confesses his love for Janet while Lucy leads a new, fruitful life thanks to her selfless sister.

A noted big game hunter, Bob Ward (John Preston), is visited in the jungles of Borneo by Russian scientist Boris Borodoff (Eugene Sigaloff) and his lovely assistant Alma Thorne (Mae Stuart), who want to prove the evolutionary link between man and beast. Ward at first declines to lead the scientists to a tribe of orangutans, but Alma's charms finally convince him. Along with Ward's pet orangutan, Borneo Joe, they track the apes and actually manage to capture a male orangutan, whom Dr. Borodoff anaesthetizes with a shot of whiskey. Borodoff, it soon appears, is quite insane -- and Bob, in an effort to calm him down, is knocked unconscious and dragged into the jungle by the tormented orangutan. He is rescued by Alma and Borneo Joe, but the trio can only watch as the enraged simian kills the evil Dr.

According to a contemporary New York Times article, the first half of the film shows "Armenia as it was before Turkish and German devastation, and led up to the deportation of priests and thousands of families into the desert.
