Synopsis
One day, A Gau, a poor gangster in Hong Kong, is going to make a life-changing decision. Bo invites Gau to join him in smuggling valuable cars back to China. What Gau doesn't know is that, accepting the offer will lead him to the journey of endless misfortune and death in China. But on the other hand, if he leaves the gang before they start their action, he will step on another journey of fighting for dignity and honour in Taiwan. To a person who have no clue over his future, which way will he walks on? What lies in front of him?Actors

May Ho (Sammi Cheng) is a woman who inherits a vast fortune when her rich husband drowns in a scuba diving accident in the Caribbean. May told several joking lies to win her Stanford-educated, extremely successful husband, and his mother and sister are less than pleased when they find out, especially since they still harbor suspicions about her motives in marrying her husband after knowing him for only seven days. Nonetheless, the house, fortune, and a portion of the family fashion company are hers. Andy is an extremely compulsive Mahjong player. Thrown out of the house by his mother and ignored by his more academically gifted and successful younger brother, Louis, he had a hard time running away from debt collectors until one day he met a young girl named Gigi after a run-in with some of the debt collectors' men. Gigi started out as a thief, but because she fell for him and gave him immense luck, Andy gained great success with his extreme good luck in mahjong games and became very rich. However he refused to marry Gigi because she, though a nice woman when with him, was in reality quite a sore loser who threw temper tantrums while on the verge of losing mahjong games. She could not understand that he couldn't stand the way she behaved. As Andy said, her behaviour could be revealed by just playing a game of mahjong where when she lost, she would throw the tables. He promised her that he would marry her if she could play a game of mahjong without such a bad temper. She couldn't and so he couldn't marry her though he loved her. In the meantime, Andy found his mother who was now suffering from Alzheimer's disease and his brother who faced bankruptcy and moved in with Andy, who coincidentally lived in a bungalow. Not wanting to lose out in finding a job, Louis who had excellent luck in Mahjong but zero skill, was conned out of all his money and even his clothes by a skilled, yet devious mahjong player, Sean, portrayed by Lau Ching-wan. But being a kind hearted simpleton, a woman on the con team, (Cherrie) fell for him and decided to mend her ways.

"Lau Ching-Wan plays a lawyer who dies in a car wreck just before answering his daughters question about ghosts, leaving behind his wife, daughter and son. To console herself, his daughter (blind from the crash) writes a novel where she, her mother and brother have died in a car wreck but her father(but blind) has survived. To her surprise, the character of her father in her book decides that HE needs to write a novel to console himself and in his novel he has died but his wife and daughter have lived...and on and on in an endlessly recursive loop, as wounded characters desperately apply fiction to try and dull the sharp edges of their grief.

Big (Andy Lau) was a Buddhist Monk, but he gave up this occupation when he realized he could see a person's past life, which would mean he would be able to predict what would happen to that person because of Karma. Choi crashes his car into a restaurant and when he revives he is captured by Captain Zhang Lei. Realizing that he will receive the death penalty for his crimes, he bargains information on his colleagues to survive. First, he introduces Captain Zhang Lei as "Uncle Bill", to become a supplier to Haha, who owns a port and can distribute drugs to other countries. Then Captain Zhang Lei poses as Haha to the real "Uncle Bill". Then they go to Choi's factory where they meet the mute brothers. Then they setup the real Haha and catch him. However, an attempt to capture the mute brothers at the factor fails, and they escape through a hidden path. Captain Zhang is livid at Choi for withholding this information at the cost of the lives of several police team members. Choi pleads for a second chance as "Uncle Bill" is really just a front for seven other powerful Hong Kong gangsters whom he did not wish to rat out because 2 of them are his relatives: one is his brother, and another is his godfather. The next day Captain Zhang poses as Haha again and meets with "Uncle Bill". They negotiate a deal to distribute drugs using his port, meanwhile Choi identifies the 7 gangster bosses. Later they discuss terms of the deal at a nightclub, where Captain Zhang, posing as Haha, accuses "Uncle Bill" of being a cop and takes him into custody. The big 7 then confront him in the parking garage, revealing their identities and confirming their business relationship. The next day, Choi leads the big 7 and their entourage to exit 441 and they arrive at a school. Choi removes his wires and reveals to the big 7 that he has ratted them out and they are surrounded by cops. A shootout ensues and nearly everyone is killed except Choi, who escapes in a school bus. However, he crashes into the escaping mute brothers who believe Choi to have ratted them out and another shootout ensues. Captain Zhang, wounded, arrives with several other wounded comrades to stop Choi. They are all killed by Choi, but Captain Zhang is able to handcuff himself to Choi's leg before he dies. Choi is then captured by SWAT reinforcements before he can escape. The film ends with Choi begging for another chance to live by trading more information on other gangsters before he is killed by lethal injection.
