C’est dans la célèbre prison de Sing Sing, à New York, que commence le film. Deux cousins, Franco et Ciccio Bacalone, y sont sur le point d’être exécutés et ils essaient désespérément d’éviter le sort qui les attend. On les traîne tous les deux dans une pièce où sont placées deux chaises, qu’ils prennent d’abord pour des chaises électriques mais qui en réalité ne servent qu’à attacher les prisonniers pour éviter qu’ils s’enfuient. C’est seulement après avoir été attachés qu'ils se rendent compte qu’ils seront exécutés au moyen d’une pilule de cyanure placée sous la chaise de Franco ; mais heureusement ce dernier, lorsqu’elle est libérée, réussit en agitant les pieds à éviter l’explosion de gaz toxiques et les sauve ainsi tous deux. Une fois leur vie sauvée, Franco écrit ses mémoires et raconte comment lui et Ciccio ont fini en prison.

Franco and Ciccio are two street artists of Sicily; after failing in a lot of debt, they are forced to flee to America. There they are immediately enrolled, since the Second World War has just broke out. Becoming experienced skydivers, Franco and Ciccio are sent on a secret mission to Germany to ascertain the situation in Nazi concentration camps. Napoleon (Lando Buzzanca) is a small-time crook with big ideas. In prison in Naples where he is serving time for a robbery charge, he is sprung by accident when a foppish villain calling himself the Baron (Pinuccio Ardia) and his two "numb-skull" cohorts, Agonia (Ugo Fangareggi) and the Captain (Dante Maggio), tunnel under his cell, having lost their way to an expected bank vault. Napoleon escapes with his rescuers through the tunnel, and upon arrival on the outside of the prison, he discovers that the three are flat broke, despite the well-dressed appearance of the Baron. Napoleon swiftly asserts himself as leader of the group by pretending to be a master criminal and suggests that they move to Rome for richer pickings. The four of them are forced to travel to Rome in the back of a cattle truck since they do not have a car.
