A woman and a poor artist begin an affair and eventually move in together, but the woman cannot get used to his life, his working-class existence. She leaves her lover to return to her relationship with a man of means. Ostensibly, she is rejecting her lover because she feels stifled by his position in society. But the class differences are metaphor for the quality of the love, with a woman deciding to be with a man who loves her for who she is rather than as an object of affection, merely the focus of a selfish love. Emmanuèle Bernheim et Alain Cavalier sont liés par trente ans d’amitié. Ils préparent un film d’après le livre autobiographique de la romancière : Tout s’est bien passé. Elle y raconte comment son père lui a demandé « d’en finir » à la suite d’un accident cardio-vasculaire. Cavalier lui propose de tenir son propre rôle et que lui, soit son père. Un matin d’hiver, Emmanuèle téléphone à Alain ; il faudra retarder le tournage jusqu’au printemps, elle est opérée d’urgence.
