The film's sets were designed by the art director Eugène Lourié.
Synopsis
Dans un pays d'Europe Centrale, le Premier Ministre vient d'être assassiné, nouvelle accueillie avec enthousiasme par un groupe d'étudiants révolutionnaires. Razumov, lui, ne s'intéresse qu'à ses études ; mais l'assassin, Heldin, est un de ses anciens camarades de faculté et se réfugie chez lui, confiant en sa loyauté. Croyant Heldin repéré par la police, Razumov tente d'obtenir de l'aide mais il est trahi et Heldin est arrêté et exécuté.Actors

Éric (Jean-Pierre Aumont), jeune ingénieur au chômage, a accepté un poste de maître-nageur dans une station touristique du Lac de Constance, où il est très apprécié par les dames. Un jour de brouillard, alors qu'il tente de traverser le lac à la nage, il est sauvé par Puck (Simone Simon), une petite sauvageonne, et une grande amitié nait entre eux. Éric tombe amoureux de Danny (Rosine Deréan), qui partage ses sentiments. Mais le riche père (Michel Simon) de la jeune fille s'oppose à leur mariage, et tous deux sont séparés. Malade et sans argent, il est désespéré, et il repousse Puck lorsque celle-ci lui avoue son amour. Elle disparait, tous pensent qu'elle s'est noyée et entreprennent des recherches dans le lac. En réalité, Puck s'est rendue dans la ville où habite Danny et, choisissant de s'effacer, elle réunit les deux jeunes gens qui ne se quitteront plus.

The story takes place in Marseille, where Marius, the son of a barkeeper César, has a romance with Fanny, neighbourhood girl of the fish sales man in the harbor. Marius dreams of sailing away one day and travel the seven seas. Fanny soon discovers she is pregnant of Marius, a shameful position in their community since she's a single mother with a father unable to secure the future of her and her child. She agrees with her mother and father's advice to marry a more prosperous salesman in the harbor, Honoré Panisse, who is 30 years older than she is. A few months after the marriage and the birth of the baby Marius returns and tries to win back Fanny.

During the cold and rainy off-season a man (Gérard Philipe) arrives in a seaside town and, giving his name only as Pierre, checks into the only hotel which remains open. His arrival arouses curiosity and a degree of suspicion, as people note that he appears to know the area, yet gives no explanation for his presence at that bleak time of year in the dead-end town. The elderly father of the hotel owner, now a mute invalid, shows signs of recognition but his condition prevents him from voicing what he observes. Pierre is treated with barely disguised petty-minded intolerance and hostility by the hotel owner, guests and habitués, but develops a friendship with Marthe (Madeleine Robinson), an all-purpose employee at the hotel. Pierre also notices a 15-year-old boy – employed as a dogsbody at the hotel, where he has been placed by the local state-run orphanage – who he has spotted engaging in rendezvous with Mme Curlier, a middle-aged female guest. His attempts to engage the somewhat surly and reticent youth however meet with rebuff.
