Synopsis

Eric Bishop is a football fanatic postman whose life is descending into crisis. Looking after his granddaughter is bringing him into contact with his ex-wife, Lily, whom he abandoned after the birth of their daughter. At the same time, his stepson Ryan is hiding a gun under the floorboards of his bedroom for a violent drugs baron. At his lowest moments Bishop considers suicide. But after a short meditation session with fellow postmen in his living room, and smoking cannabis stolen from his stepson, hallucinations bring forth his footballing hero, the famously philosophical Eric Cantona, who gives him advice. His relationship with Lily improves dramatically. Bishop finds the gun and confronts his stepson. Ryan admits to his involvement with the drugs gang, and Bishop attempts to return the gun to the gangster. He is forced to keep it himself, however, when a Rottweiler is set on him in his car. The gangster then posts footage on YouTube of Bishop's humiliation. The entire family is then arrested by the police on a tip-off but they fail to find the gun. Eric Cantona then advises Bishop to seek help from his friends and to 'surprise' himself. Bishop organises 'Operation Cantona', sneaking dozens of fellow Manchester United fans – wearing Cantona masks – into the gangster's house and humiliating him and his family, threatening to put the video of their operation onto YouTube, in turn. The film ends at Bishop's daughter's graduation day, where the family re-unites in peace.

Jean-Pierre, a soccer agent, has agreed to keep Didier, the dog of Annabelle, a friend who is a film journalist. During the night, the Labrador is transformed into a human, at least in appearance, but Didier is still a dog psychologically. Fifteen-year-old Lucas moves from Stockholm, Sweden, to a small town in Norway. He falls in love with Susanne, the goalkeeper of the local girl's football team. Le film se base sur le visionnage d'un match de foot par un homme dans une pièce abondamment décorée de posters et différents objets liés à l'univers du football. Le film consiste en une succession d'images archives montrant les réactions de supporters durant un match et d'images animées surréalistes. L'acteur qui joue le spectateur derrière son poste de télévision joue aussi l'arbitre, les joueurs, les médecins et les croque-morts dans les passages surréalistes. Le film suit une certaine mécanique propre au cinéma de Švankmajer : une série de photos de joueurs colorés montées de manière énergique avec en fond des commentaires de présentateurs brouillés, puis une chorégraphie jouée par les joueurs avec le ballon, puis la destruction d'un ou plusieurs joueurs. Švankmajer s'amuse à détruire des portraits de glaise à l'image du spectateur de toutes les manières imaginables (visage arraché par une ventouse, démolition à coups de marteau, tête passée au hachoir, etc.). Le score du match progresse à mesure que les joueurs sont détruits. Les joueurs ainsi anéantis sont mis sur des brancards puis dans des cercueils aux couleurs de leur équipe, qui intègreront également les séquences surréalistes. On voit les réactions du public passionné en archive et le spectateur souvent montré en train de manger ou boire.

Gregory Underwood (John Gordon Sinclair) is an awkward teenager who plays in his school football team. She subsequently takes Gregory's place as centre forward, and Gregory in turn replaces his friend Andy (Robert Buchanan) as goalkeeper.
