It was released in April 1945, a month before the unconditional surrender of Germany. The film is visually expressionist, something comparatively rare during the Nazi era.
Synopsis
In a rural village, the tyrannical Jonas Lauretz intimidates his family, mistress and neighbours. After he disappears one night, it is widely believed that his eldest daughter, Silvelie, has murdered him. A new investigating judge arrives in the village, he falls in love with Silvelie. He becomes torn between his love for her and his duty to investigate the potential crime. Eventually it emerges that it was not Silvelie who murdered Jonas Lauretz but the village innkeeper Bündner. He is forgiven by everyone because they all shared his desire to murder him.Actors

The story centers around Frances Benedetto (Mary Stuart Masterson), a victim of domestic violence. The movie follows Frances's relationship to her increasingly abusive NYCPD officer husband (played by Anthony LaPaglia), who has the police force on his side, and her eventual escape to Florida with her son (played by Will Rothaar). Eventually her husband finds them and attacks her. Her son's sports coach comes to the house when she does not pick her son up from practice on time and finds her beaten and bruised in the hallway. Meanwhile, her husband kidnaps their son. Five years later, she has married the coach and has a daughter, although she has never found her son. Her son meets up with his aunt by chance on the street, and Frances (her name now changed to Beth) receives a phone call from him.

Dolores Claiborne (Bates) works as a domestic servant on a Maine island. On March 11, 2005, Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) escapes from the Fulton County courthouse in Atlanta, during his trial involving a rape case. One night, unemployed widower Joseph (Peter Mullan) drunkenly kicks his dog Bluey to death.
