On the outskirts of town is a large abandoned fort turned wooded park. Detective Le Saint is an ex-soldier assigned to protect a police informant who he arranges to meet at an abandoned fort in the woods. Alice is a college student who sneaks into the fort with a friend to go exploring. Unfortunately, the fort is also used by a group of men as a base for hunting humans: vagrants, tourists, and anyone else who happens to stray too far into the woods or stay after the park closes. When a 100-year-old military academy falls on hard times and is forced to merge with a school for girls, the academy's resident ghosts (Dick O'Neill, Victor French and Louise Latham) are outraged and aroused from their sleep to seek justice. Outraged by this disrespect of tradition, the spirits are further appalled by a modern world of equal rights for women, rock 'n' roll as well as the dishonest designs a wealthy matron (Ruta Lee) has for the school. Honor-bound "to defend these hallowed halls", the ghost trio declares war on the living who are involved in their own battle of the sexes.

With only his paintbrushes, Woody joins the migration westward from the Dust Bowl to supposedly greener California pastures via boxcar and hitchhiking.
