Viduthalai (Freedom) is a Tamil film is directed by K. Vijayan. It stars Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Vishnuvardhan and Madhavi.

The movie is a remake of Bollywood blockbuster movie Qurbani

Synopsis

The combination of Super Star Rajini and Kannada Superstar Dr. Vishnuvardhan came together for this movie. Raja (RajiniKanth) is a thief- expert in breaking open treasuries. In one such robbery, he is being watched by a jolly but shrewd police inspector Rajasingam (Sivaji Ganesan). Radha (Madhavi) is a gorgeous disco club dancer & singer. Both Raja and Radha are in love with each other. But Raja has not disclosed to Radha that he is a thief. An evil brother-sister duo- seek revenge against crime boss Sudarshan who cheated Jwaala and siphoned her money. Therefore they hire Raja to break open Sudarshan's treasury and steal back the money. Raja is paid a token amount to do the job. But suddenly Inspector Rajasingam arrests Raja and the court sentences Raja to 2 years imprisonment. Radha is devastated after she realizes Raja was a thief. Meanwhile, Amar (Vishnuvardhan) is an ace crime member in Sudarshan's gang who revolts against Sudarshan. He is a widower with a daughter is studying in a boarding school. However before quitting Sudarshan's gang, Amar has committed a crime wearing a mask and Inspector Rajasingam is investigating that case. Once Amar saves Radha from a gang of rowdy bikers. They meet regularly as Radha likes Amar's daughter. Soon Amar begins to love Radha who does not reciprocate because she still loves Raja. Amar realizes Radha is not interested and does not proceed. Raja completes his jail sentence. While returning, he meets the Vijaykumar, who again reminds him of the deal to rob Sudarshan. During the conversation, Amar incidentally reaches the site and a fist fight ensues between Amar and the Vijaykumar. While fleeing, Vijaykumar swears revenge against Amar. Thus Raja and Amar meet for the first time. Raja takes Amar to introduce to Radha but both Radha and Amar pretend as if they do not know each other since they don't want Raja to unnecessarily suspect them.

The movie revolves around three men Shankar, Salim and Simon who take the responsibility of reforming the society. An aspiring young wannabe actor Raja (Rajinikanth) from a village get into a fast city which is full of crooks and drug dealers. As he searching for a place in the dream factory, he falls for the daughter of the house owner (Jaiganesh). Charmed by his looks and character, the girl (Gowthami) also falls for him. One day he accidentally meet his childhood friend Bhaskar (Raghuvaran) who is a spoiled rich guy. He offers Raja an acting job, then takes him to his uncle's house. Raja is to be in charge of the administration of the household and take care of five children (Bhaskar's nieces and nephews) each of whom have issues (such as being lazy, not studying etc). Raja finds out that Bhaskar is cheating his uncle out of funds and using him to do the same. Bhaskar involves in drug business along with his associates (Azhagu, Kitty). Ravichandran who has blindness recovers from the problem and pretends to be blind in order to find out the truth of Bhaskar. After finding out the truth, Ravichandran throws Bhaskaran out of the home. In retaliation, Bhaskar takes away his uncle's car resulting in Ravichandran getting arrested for drugs. Raja along with children goes to Bhaskar's den catches him redhandedly.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.
