Villa-Lobos: A Life of Passion (Portuguese: Villa-Lobos - Uma Vida de Paixão) is a 2000 Brazilian drama film directed by Zelito Viana. It was entered into the 22nd Moscow International Film Festival. It won the 2nd Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil for Best Score, and the 5th Brazilian Film Festival of Miami for Best Art Direction. Its production started in 1997 as Villa Lobos - História de Uma Paixão.

Synopsis

La vie de Heitor Villa-Lobos, le plus génial des compositeurs classiques brésiliens. Petit, il connaît la violence de son père et la tristesse de sa mère. Ses décéptions amoureuses avec Lucilla, sa première femme, le font souffrir, tout comme le fait de ne pas avoir d'enfants. De même, sa musique n'est pas comprise par la société à laquelle il appartient. En dépit des difficultés, Villa-Lobos poursuit son destin de compositeur et la musique transcende sa réalité.

The film is based on the novel Memórias do Distrito de Diamantina, written by João Felicio dos Santos (who has a small role in the film as a Roman Catholic pastor). It is a romanticized retelling of the true story of Chica da Silva, an 18th-century African slave in the state of Minas Gerais, who attracts the attention of João Fernandes de Oliveira, a Portuguese sent by Lisbon with the Crown's exclusive contract for mining diamonds, and eventually becomes his lover. He quickly asserts control, letting the intendant and other authorities know that he's onto their corruption scheme. Eventually Lisbon hears of João's excesses and sends an inspector. José, a political radical, provides Xica refuge.

Une version peu conformiste de l'Inconfidência Mineira à la fin du XVIII siècle. Japan, 1908. Motivated by poverty in the country and few job prospects, many Japanese have emigrated in search of opportunities. As the emigration company only accepted family groups who had at least a couple, Yamada (Jiro Kawarazaki) and Kobayashi (Keniti Kaneko) who were brothers, see as solution that Yamada would marry Titoe (Kyoko Tsukamoto), who was only 16 years old. Yamada and Titoe had just met and, along with a cousin, they depart to Brazil. After 52 days of travel they finally arrive in Brazil where they will work in Santa Rosa farm, in São Paulo, where the coffee expansion was intense. But they stumble upon a foreman who handles hostile settlers, demanding to work to exhaustion. In addition they are stolen by the owners of the farm, only being treated with respect by other settlers and by Tonho (Antônio Fagundes), the counter of the farm.
