The film was selected as the Chilean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. It was awarded the World Cinema Jury Prize (Dramatic) at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
Synopsis
The film depicts Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval’s road to becoming considered one of Chile’s greatest folklorists and artists. It chronicles her guitar playing at a very young age, the ambience of her musician father’s haunts, and the rural settings of southern Chile in the Ñuble Province.Actors

Riccardo Broschi décide de faire castrer son petit frère Carlo, futur Farinelli, en maquillant cela sous la forme d'un « accident », afin qu'il puisse conserver cette voix cristalline sensationnelle sans laquelle la musique de Riccardo, qui est compositeur, ne vaudrait rien. Le jeune homme parcourt les opéras avec son frère. Une jeune femme, Alexandra, vient un jour demander aux frères Broschi de donner une représentation dans un petit théâtre anglais en pleine faillite. Ils acceptent. C'est alors que s'engage la concurrence entre les Broschi qui veulent sauver le théâtre et Haendel, l'ancien maître des deux frères et célèbre compositeur. Le théâtre gagne considérablement en popularité, mais Haendel tente par tous les moyens de récupérer la voix exceptionnelle de Farinelli. Haendel fait une allusion à « l'accident » qui a coûté sa virilité à Farinelli. Ce dernier découvre alors la vérité et la relation privilégiée qu'il avait avec Riccardo s'efface. Farinelli et Alexandra sont amoureux. Riccardo, qui cherche à se faire pardonner et à rendre une vie « normale » à son petit frère, fait un enfant à Alexandra, puis part s'engager dans l'armée. Il disparaît de la vie de Farinelli, que l'on voit, dans l'une des dernières scènes du film, embrasser le ventre arrondi par la grossesse d’Alexandra.

Clara Wieck vit avec son père Friedrich Wieck, professeur de piano, à Leipzig. Il est convaincu de son talent au piano et fait tout son possible pour révéler sa fille. Inlassablement il oblige l'enfant prodige à des répétitions et des concerts. En voyant la réussite de la jeune fille et donc des méthodes du père, d'autres jeunes pianistes sont séduits. Le jeune pianiste et compositeur Robert Schumann est un élève de Wieck. Clara est âgée de 11 ans, Robert en a 20. Des années plus tard, Clara tombe amoureuse de Robert, compositeur talentueux mais sans succès. Le père Wieck s'oppose à leur union et envoie sa fille à Dresde prendre des cours de chant pour les séparer. Le jeune couple n'abandonne pas. Robert retrouve Clara, ils décident de se marier. Cependant, ils ont besoin de l'accord du père de la jeune fille. Ils lui intentent un procès devant un tribunal de Leipzig qu'ils remportent. Cela aboutit à la rupture entre le père et la fille, entre le professeur et l'élève.

American burlesque performer Steve Martin (William Demarest) offers to play a song for his audience, if they agree to sing along. Only one person does sing, a young boy named Asa Yoelson (Scotty Beckett). Steve is bowled over by the boy's voice, but Asa realizes he should be singing at the synagogue with his father, Cantor Yoelson (Ludwig Donath). Asa arrives late, and is later reprimanded by his strict father. Asa is reluctant to explain where he was, but Steve Martin visits the Yoelsons' home. He explains that he heard Asa sing at the burlesque house, and that he wants Asa to be part of his act. Papa Yoelson refuses to consider it.

Elton John fait irruption à une réunion des alcooliques anonymes, habillé avec un costume de scène orange extravagant. In 1890 Paris, as crowds pour into the Moulin Rouge nightclub, young artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec finishes a bottle of cognac and sketches the dancers as they perform. The nightclub's regulars each stop by: singer Jane Avril teases Henri charmingly, dancers La Goulue and Aicha fight, and owner Maurice Joyant offers Henri free drinks for a month in exchange for painting a promotional poster. At closing time, Henri waits for the crowds to disperse before standing to reveal his four-foot six-inch body. As he walks to his Montmartre apartment, he recalls the events that led to his disfigurement. It is learned Lautrec falls down a flight of stairs, where his legs fail to heal due to a genetic weakness resulting from his parents being first cousins. His legs stunted and pained, Henri loses himself in his art, while his father leaves his mother, the countess, to ensure they have no more children. Henri is a bright, happy child, revered by his father, the Count de Toulouse-Lautrec. As a young adult he proposes to the woman he loves, but when she tells him no woman will ever love him, he leaves his childhood home in despair to begin a new life as a painter in Paris.
