Add to a movie listThe Journey to Melonia (Swedish: Resan till Melonia) is a 1989 Swedish-Norwegian animated fantasy adventure film directed by Per Åhlin, very loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest. It was Per Åhlin's first fully animated feature film, since his earlier films Out of an Old Man's Head and Dunderklumpen! had both used a mix of animation and live action. The full English title is The Journey to Melonia: Fantasies of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'.
It won two Guldbagge Awards for Best Creative Achievement (a category with three awards for technical achievements without their own categories). The first was to Åhlin for the animation and the second to Björn Isfält for the music.
Synopsis
The beautiful paradise island Melonia is inhabited by the sorcerer Prospero with his daughter Miranda, the albatross Ariel, the good-natured vegetable-faced gardener Caliban and William the dog-nosed poet. They live a generally peaceful life, except for Caliban who has to work hard with the garden. A few miles away lies the dark island Plutonia, where the greedy capitalists Slug and Slagg rule. Once as green and flourishing as Melonia, Plutonia is now perceived as hell on earth, where children are forced to, under slave conditions, build weapons and tools of war, which Slug and Slagg believe is the way of the future. With Plutonia's resources nearly exhausted, Slug and Slagg turn their gaze on the unexploited Melonia, scheming to take it over with a gigantic drill.Actors

On the way home to the run-down shack he lives in with a can of dog food meant for himself, Johan Björk is accidentally covered by a pile of car tires thrown by a man who fails to notice him. His cries for help aren't perceived by anyone except one drunk, who is caught by the police when calling for assistance. Finally, at night, a young couple making love on the pile of tires notice him. They help him to get up and assist him to his home. He is hurt in the leg and understands that he can't take care of himself anymore, so he is put in a retirement home.

On a summer evening in northern Sweden, when the sun doesn’t quite set, Dunderklumpen (an animated character) comes out of the woods to seek some friends to keep him company. He comes upon a "human" house of the Wolgers family where Dunderklumpen finds toys belonging to a boy named Jens and his young sister. Using his magic, Dunderklumpen brings the toys to life and takes them away to the woods where he lives. This adorable and amusing crew includes the small but fiercely brave lion Lionel, the demanding toy girl Doll, the cute harmonica-playing bear Pellegnillot, and the ridiculous Dummy the Bunny.

An antropomorphic dog named Sture is talked into taking a trip to Paris by his friend Picasso. After a series of misfortunes they end up in Scotland instead, staying at a mysterious hotel. In the Pride Lands of Africa, a lion rules over the animals as king. The birth of King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi's son Simba creates envy and resentment in Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, who knows his nephew now replaces him as heir to the throne. After Simba has grown into a young cub, Mufasa gives him a tour of the Pride Lands, teaching him the responsibilities of being a king and the circle of life. Later that day, Scar tricks Simba and his best friend Nala into exploring a forbidden elephant graveyard, despite the protests of Mufasa's hornbill majordomo Zazu. At the graveyard, three spotted hyenas named Shenzi, Banzai and Ed attack the cubs before Mufasa, alerted by Zazu, rescues them and forgives Simba for his actions. In Verona, Italy, live two rival families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Constant clashes took Prince Sunny to ban fights and duels between them, with the promise to punish those who violate the peace. Angel Benvolio is invited to a masquerade ball at the house of Capulet - Romeu Montague Jimmy Five decides to go there in disguise. Once there, he bumps into Juliet Monicapulet, who falls in love for him. After a meeting at the counter, she decides to marry Romeo - but he is reluctant, only changing his mind after being beaten by Friar Smudge. After a marriage that happens just because the bride was armed with a bunny, Romeo and Friar Smudge rush to play in a marble championship. There, Romeo fights with Chuck Billy Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, and is expelled from the city. Desperate, Juliet asks the Friar to come up with a foolproof plan - and he decides to read Romeo and Juliet. But as the book ends with the two protagonists dead, Juliet Monicapulet does not like this ending and goes behind the Prince Sunny, that decides to forgive Romeo.

The animals of the Pridelands gather to witness the celebration of the newborn cub, Kiara, daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala. Simba's father, Mufasa, proudly watches over the ceremony from the Heavens above. As she grows older, Kiara becomes annoyed with her father's overprotective parenting. Simba assigns Timon and Pumbaa to watch her. Kiara ignores her father's warning and the duo's attention and enters the "Outlands," where she meets Kovu, a cub who was chosen by Simba's uncle Scar to be his heir. When Kovu retaliates to Kiara's playing, Simba confronts the young cub just as Zira, Kovu's mother, confronts him. Zira reminds Simba of how he exiled her and the other Outsiders, and she informs him that Kovu was hand-chosen to be Scar's successor.

The Duke of Athens decrees that Hermia (Rose Tapley) shall forsake Lysander (Maurice Costello) in favour of her father's choice, Demetrius (Walter Ackerman).
