Chandramukhi (Hema Malini), accompanied by her parents, visits the hill resort of Shimla for the first time in her life. She senses some familiarity with the place and gets strange feelings for which she does not know the reason. Chandramukhi and her family meet Dr. Naresh Gupta (Vinod Khanna). Naresh is attracted towards Chandramukhi and their families talk about getting them married to each other. Thakur Virendra Singh lives a wealthy lifestyle in India along with his wife and a son, Kumar (Ranjeet). His relative Bihari (Om Shivpuri) is envious, and successfully switches his son, Kishan (Rajesh Khanna), with Kumar, and also ends up killing Virendra. In this manner, Kumar grows up a wealthy lifestyle, while Kishan lives a poor lifestyle, shunned by his father and his mother, who has lost the use of her vocal cords. Bihari takes Kishan to his brother in Bombay, and leaves him there to lead a life of crime. 20 years later, Kishan has grown up and is now a master burglar. He meets with another burglar, Mary (Tina Munim), and both decide to be fifty fifty partners. However, Mary has other plans, she ditches Kishan and joins forces with Diwan Shamsher Singh (Kader Khan) to masquerade as the long-lost daughter of Ranimaa of Chandpur. Mary does not know that it was the Diwan who has done away with Rajkumari Ratna, and he will not hesitate to kill Mary - or anyone else who dares to stand in his way and the treasure of Chandpur.

Vijay (Rajesh Khanna) is a very proud rich man who thinks money can buy anything. He harbors love for Asha and tries to win her but she rejects him for his arrogance. He gets angry as well as disappointed when Asha marries an account clerk instead. Soon after he is involved in car accident in which he loses his eyesight completely, and the doctor thinks Vijay will need a new pair of eyes. Vijay orders for eyes, but it isn't as simple as Vijay thought, the doctor explains to him that it's difficult to find an eye donor. That is when Vijay realizes that money cannot buy everything in life. Then he starts believing in God and starts chanting prayers. Only a few days after, he finds a donor and his eyes are operated upon. Now Vijay can see and he also has realized that money is indeed very useless in certain circumstances.

Arvind Kumar Choudhary is widowed, respectable and wealthy businessman, who lives with his only son, Arun (Rajesh Khanna), in a palatial house. He remarries another woman, Sujata, a widow with two daughters, Veena and Seema. Arun does not respect her and refuses to even speak with her. Arun meets Neema Deshmukh (Shabana Azmi) and both of fall in love. With approval of their respective families, they get married. Then things start to slide financially for the Choudharys when Arun accidentally breaks a valuable diamond while daydreaming about Neema; the Choudharys lose all their savings, building, vehicles and property, move to a shanty apartment, and Arvind passes away. Arun takes over the reins of this family, and starts talking to his stepmother. Neema gives birth to a baby boy and they name him Abhinandan. Misunderstandings occur between Sujata and Neema, they escalate, fueled by some gossip from neighboring women, leading to arguments between Arun and her. Then one day, Mahendra, Neema's brother sees Arun with another woman, informs Neema, who quickly packs her things and leaves Arun. She goes to the courts, gets the custody of Abhinandan, and Arun is only allowed a weekly 4 - PM visit, which he is unhappy with, and decides to wait until his son is 14 and will then take him home. Then Neema's father is arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau accepting a huge bribe from Mr. Lalwani; Mahendra asks Neema to sell her jewelery so that he can immigrate to Germany, she does so, he leaves, never to be heard from again.

A woman named Asha lives in a hostel where she gets tortured by nightmares. Later on she goes to Dr. Vijay (her lover) for treatment. She leaves the hostel after she realises that neither the hostel authorities nor her friends from hostel are happy due to her behaviour. Her dreams are of her insane aunt who tries to strangle her. Her aunt killed her mother years ago in their ancestral mansion. After understanding her case, Dr. Vijay decides to take her far away from the city to her ancestral mansion, where she spent her childhood. Shobha, a close friend of Asha, also decides to accompany Asha to the mansion. In the big old mansion, Asha witnesses lots of things which make her more scared. Vijay does not agree with her. Later Ashok, a cousin of Asha, comes to India to meet her. Later, on the eve of Asha's birthday, Ashok's wife gets murdered.
