Way Back Home is a 1931 American Pre-Code drama film directed by William A. Seiter. The screenplay by Jane Murfin is based on characters created for the NBC Radio show Seth Parker by Phillips Lord.

Synopsis

A decade earlier, Jonesport, Maine preacher Seth Parker and his wife offered shelter to runaway Robbie Turner, who as an infant was abandoned by his sadistic, alcoholic father Rufe. Mary Lucy Duffy, who has been banished from her home by her father for fraternizing with farm hand David Clark, is living with the Parkers as well, and her romance with David attracts the attention of the local gossips. Years earlier, David's mother Rose had run off with a stranger, and when she and her illegitimate infant son returned to Jonesport, they were shunned by the townspeople.

The musical starts with the busybody postman who reads everybody's mail, Hector (Walter Brennan), delivering mail to the Dana household and particularly to Cora (Helen Broderick), the maid who he is in love with. As the Canadian Pacific Railway makes its way through the western frontier of Canada in the early 1880s, railroad workers and settlers come under frequent attack by Indians who resent the white man's encroachment on their land. One such attack on a wagon train leaves only one survivor of the Indian massacre, a young girl named Susannah Sheldon (Shirley Temple) who is found by a mounted patrol in the command of Inspector Angus "Monty" Montague. The young girl is taken back to the post where she is adopted by Monty (Randolph Scott) and his friend, Pat O'Hannegan (J. Farrell MacDonald).
