) is a 1974 Filipino drama film directed by Lino Brocka. The films stars Christopher De Leon (in his debut role), Hilda Koronel, Lolita Rodriguez and Eddie Garcia. Considered one of Brocka's most important films, it won six awards (including Best Picture) at the 23rd FAMAS Awards in 1975.

Synopsis
The story begins with a flashback to the past of a woman called Kuala (Lolita Rodriguez). An herbolario (traditional/folk medicine practitioner) performs an abortion on Kuala, as Cesar (Eddie Garcia) watches her. The abortion was a success, but when Kuala sees the aborted fetus, she becomes disturbed. In the next scene, she walks in the middle of a grassy plain, and as the heat becomes more and more unbearable, she becomes insane.Actors

A teenage boy befriends a well known B class actress Rachelle (Dina Bonnevie) who is having an affair with a Mayor Edmundo Guatlo (Eddie Garcia) whose wife Rowena (Charo Santos-Concio) wants to get rid of her in order to not snag controversy during the elections but in only two clauses she will disappear if he releases her lover out of prison (Christopher De Leon) and kill his rival opponent in the elections. This is a story of day-to-day living by Renata Lolita Rodriguez, her daughter Esther Nora Aunor and Esther's husband Luis (Raul Aragon). Ester and Luis are a couple trying to start their own family while living in Renata's house. The couple can not bear a child due to Ester's sterility, which was ironic being that Ester is a family planning program worker. Ester's barrenness becomes a source of constant argument between the husband and wife, aggravated by Ester's unwillingness to allow Luis to seek employment out of the country. Renata often acts as a pacifier of her daughter during the couple's arguments. Unfortunately, Ester and her mother get into a heated argument resulting to Renata feeling emotional about it. She then confides to Luis about her problems, which results to one night of passionate union. The single night of union impregnates the aging Renata who refuses to have an abortion. Renata and Luis try to hide their fault until Ester discovers the truth accidentally when Renata gave birth to her child.

Everyone notices how different Andrew (Ricky Davao) and Gillian (Lorna Tolentino) look from their respective sets of parents but no one really makes a fuss about it. What is even more surprising is that the two have never felt close with the families growing up. Instead, Gillian becomes more closely attached to Andrew's parents (Ricky Belmonte and Marita Zobel) while Andrew feels more drawn to Gillian's parents, Bernardo (Dante Rivero) and Patria (Gina Pareño). Little do they suspect that this is because Andrew and Gillian had been switched at birth. Andrew's real father, Bernardo, a poor private driver, decides that Andrew will have a better life growing up with his rich bosses. So he makes sure that only he and his wife Patria know that he has switched the two babies when the mothers both gave birth at a provincial hospital. No amount of pleading from Patria can make him change his mind. Out of frustration, Patria resorts to maltreating Gillian. The latter finds comfort with Andrew's mother, Rose (Marita Zobel), and later with Mark, (Gary Valenciano) a rich suitor. Jealous of Gillian's new found attention, Andrew decides to force himself on Gillian, an act which leads to the revelation of the secret of their parentage.

Arturo (Phillip Salvador) also known as Turing together with his wife Luz Manalastas (Gina Alajar) works in a printing press. Turing was later forced to ask for a raise from his boss after his wife became pregnant. Turing's boss aksed him to sign a waiver that he is not a member of any labor union. Shortly, his friends invited him to be part of a labor union that they are planning to form but Turing has no option but to refuse due to his waiver. Turing was badly treated and was called a traitor after refusing to join. The printing press later closed and Luz is unable to get discharged from the hospital where she is confined due to pending fees. Turing needs money to pay the hospital bill so Luz can finally get out from the hospital and turns into crime to acquire the money he needs.
