The film was a great success, De Sica and Lia Franca became stars and the song Parlami d'amore Mariù was a hit. Rare in Italian film history, it was filmed on real Milan locations, nowadays it is a sort of documentary how was Milan in the 1930s. The film was remade in 1953 by Glauco Pellegrini.
Synopsis
À Milan, Bruno, un jeune conducteur de maître rencontre Mariuccia, une vendeuse en parfumerie, l'emmène sur les bords du lac Majeur en lui faisant croire que la voiture lui appartient. Après une journée idyllique, il tombe malheureusement sur la famille de son employeur et doit les raccompagner en ville sans pouvoir prévenir Mariuccia. Il tente de revenir la chercher mais sa voiture est accidentée. Bruno, licencié par son maître, vient s'excuser à la parfumerie mais Mariuccia refuse de lui pardonner. C'est alors qu'ayant retrouvé un nouvel emploi, Bruno doit promener son nouveau patron qui invite Mariuccia à monter dans sa voiture. La jeune fille rend Bruno ivre de jalousie. Celui-ci donne sa démission. Mais, Mariuccia le recommande auprès d'un industriel et Bruno travaille, à présent, comme démonstrateur en puits artésien. Après moult disputes et scènes de jalousie, les deux jeunes gens se réconcilient dans le taxi du père de Mariuccia.Actors

In Milan, Gianni is a young and poor newspaper seller who makes a dull and boring life. But Gianni is a friend of a wealthy aristocrat of the city which is called Count Max Varaldo, exactly equal to the poor seller's physical. Usually Count Max invites Gianni in his palace, because he likes to take an interest in the affairs of the people, and also because Gianni makes him laugh with his jokes. One day Count Max has to take a trip on a cruise, and leaves control of his palace to Gianni, who takes advantage. In fact the lover of Count Max, Lauretta, believes that Gianni is the noble, his boyfriend, and so the poor newspaper seller initiates a series of misunderstandings.

The late nineteenth century: Count d'Origo, a notorious roué, spots an attractive woman. Hoping to seduce her, he attempts to find out who she is. In fact she is Geraldine, a practiced courtesan. However, the local mayor tells the Count that she is Ottavia, the wife of his nephew, Enrico, a struggling young musician. Enrico is hoping to stage his newly completed opera. With the Count's support he will get the backing he needs. His uncle hopes to help Enrico by employing Geraldine to impersonate Ottavia, so she can be "seduced". Before she submits, Geraldine will extract a promise from the Count to stage her "husband"'s opera. Geraldine, Ottavia and Enrico agree to go along with the plot. However, as Enrico introduces Geraldine to the eager Count he becomes increasingly jealous as the Count moves in. Eventually he forces the Count to leave after becoming angered by his advances. Charmed by his protectiveness, Geraldine asks him to pretend she is really his wife for one night, so that she can live her dream of having a normal life with a devoted husband.

In a small town on Lake Como, the peasants Renzo and Lucia love each other, but are hampered by the wickedness of the squire Don Rodrigo, which prevents the parish priest Don Abbondio to celebrate the wedding.
