The film is a spin-off of the original story of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber. Zhang Wuji retrieves the Heaven-reliant Sword and the Dragon-slaying Saber and places them in the Ming Cult's headquarters. He carves the inscriptions from the Nine Yang Manual on the walls of a secret chamber and asks his godfather Xie Xun, who has become a monk, to help him guard the chamber. Zhang returns the original copy of the manual to the Shaolin Sect.

In 1967, Hong Kong, Ben, Paul, and Frank are childhood friends and members of a gang. They regularly brawl with members of other gangs. Ben becomes engaged to his girlfriend Jane and Frank takes out a loan to pay for the reception. He is attacked by the leader of another gang, Ringo, and they fight over the money. Formerly successful actor Chin Siu-ho, star of Mr. Vampire, becomes depressed and suicidal when his wife leaves him. He moves into a dilapidated apartment building, where he meets Uncle Yin, the building's long-time, friendly supervisor. Sas and Chow Cho-sam are sworn brothers who grew up in a triad gang and lacked family warmth and proper education. Sam falls in love with May and they have shotgun marriage. In order to pay for their marriage, Sas gets involved in a robbery where Sam injures three policemen and the two are imprisoned for six years. Sas and Sam borrow money from a loan shark for their private business. However, their business fails and debt collector Fu forces them to kidnap to pay off their debts. Sas was dissatisfied with Fu's decision to murder the girl after collecting ransom and personally hands Ka-po back to May which angers Fu and he hires people to chop Sas. After Sas dies from his injuries, the sadden and angered Sam seeks vengeance on Fu. After some fighting when Sam was about to kill Fu, his long lost father, Inspector Chow Wing, persuades him to reform and not to repeat the same mistakes. Wing hands Fu to the law and helps Sam turn over a new leaf.

In 1917 Republican China, Liu Jinxi and his wife Yu are an ordinary couple with two sons, Fangzheng and Xiaotian, living together in Liu Village, Yunnan. One day, two bandits enter the village and attempt to rob the general store. Liu happens to be in the shop, and he fights and kills the robbers when they turn violent. Hu Te et al. escape the burning Shaolin temple after the Qing soldiers destroyed it in Shaolin Temple. The group of 5 decide to develop secret codes to identify fellow patriots, enlist those patriots and eventually meet up again to escape to the south away from the Qings, and also identify the traitor who sold out Shaolin temple. Ma Fu Yi (the traitor, played by Wang Lung Wei), joins the Qing top fighters to eliminate the rebels but is exposed by Ma Chao-Tsing who gets captured by Ma Fu Yi. Hu meets up with a group of Shaolin men secretly posing as bandits to rescue Ma as their leader is killed in the process, thus the bandits join the rest of the Shaolin patriots.
