Who the Hell is Juliette? (Spanish: ¿Quién diablos es Juliette?) is a Mexican 1997 documentary film written and directed by Carlos Marcovich. The film is about Yuliet Ortega, a teenage prostitute who lives in Havana, Cuba and Fabiola Quiroz, a Mexican model. Marcovich intentionally misspelled the title character, "Yuliet Ortega", as "Juliette Ortega" in the credits.

Marcovich met Fabiola Quiroz during the shooting of a music video. He met Yuliet Ortega in Cuba and decided that she would be the younger sister of Quiroz in the music video. Marcovich features the similarities of the two women: green eyes and persistent thoughts about their missing fathers. After shooting the music video, he filmed the two women over a period of three years and created the film, Who the Hell is Juliette?

The film was filmed in Cuba, Mexico, and the United States.

Synopsis

Who the Hell is Juliette? begins with Yuliet Ortega saying that her name on the title card, Juliette Ortega, is misspelled and demanding that it is corrected. The director immediately complies and the card is corrected to Yuliet Ortega. Ortega is a 16-year-old girl who is being taken care of by her grandmother. Her mother committed suicide, while her father left his family and went to the United States. Ortega became a jinetera to support herself.

The story is that of a lost semi-classical Thumri song, Lagat Karejwa ma Chot, Phool Gendwa na Maar, sung in 1935 by Rasoolan Bai, the well known singer from Varanasi. The film shows in detail that tawaifs were not mere sex workers, but were great artistes who contributed to music, dance, theatre, film and the Urdu literary tradition.

Everly (Salma Hayek), a prostitute working for the brutal criminal overlord Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe), is being attacked in her apartment by Taiko's enforcers after he discovers that she has been working with the police to bring down his organization. However, though Taiko expected his men to kill her easily after torturing her, Everly retrieves a gun she had hidden and manages to kill all of her attackers. Taiko then begins a sadistic game of toying with Everly, dispatching numerous hired killers and offering the other prostitutes in the building (which he presumably owns) a bounty if they manage to kill her. Meanwhile, Everly attempts to contact her mother Edith (Laura Cepeda) and young daughter Maisey (Aisha Ayamah) to save them from other henchmen of Taiko and get them out of the situation alive.

The film begins with discussion amidst Hole's 1994 and 1995 world tour, then works backwards to Schemel's childhood growing up in Marysville, Washington, and details her coming out to her family as a lesbian, as well as her immersion in Seattle's music scenes, where she would eventually cross paths with Kurt Cobain. Through contemporary interviews with Schemel's bandmates Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, and Melissa Auf der Maur, her beginnings in Hole are detailed, including her audition with Love and Erlandson in Los Angeles amidst the Rodney King riots, as well as her time living with Love and husband Kurt Cobain, and the songwriting process between Love, Schemel, and Erlandson. Additional commentary from fellow female drummers, musicians, peers, and friends of Schemel's are provided throughout. After the death of Hole's bassist Kristen Pfaff in 1994 (only two months after the suicide of Kurt Cobain), the band embarked on a world tour with Auf der Maur as Pfaff's replacement, and Schemel, along with Love, began heavily using heroin. Schemel's drug use leads to a breakup with her girlfriend, who acted as Love's personal assistant on the tour, and Schemel reflects on her time in a rehabilitation facility she checked into with Love after the conclusion of the tour in 1995.

Rat, the dumpster diver; Tiny, the teenage prostitute; Shellie, the baby-faced one; and DeWayne, the hustler, are all old beyond their years. All are underage survivors fighting for life and love on the streets of downtown Seattle, Washington.

The first scene of the film is a reenactment of a kidnapping. A girl is kidnapped and brought to the apartment of a criminal organization, where she is confined with other girls in a room with a creaky ceiling lit by a flickering lightbulb. The girls are naked and cry from fear as men examine them and shout commands and threats at them. One girl is dragged away into another room. The girls are then brutally abused until they become sexually submissive. These events take place in a small European town, possibly in Moldova. The film asserts that 10% of the population of Moldova has been sexually trafficked. From there, the film tracks the girls through Serbia and Croatia to Amsterdam's red-light district and markets in Berlin and Las Vegas. Among legal prostitution in cities, the slavery goes undetected. Slaves are depicted in confinement, at their places of work, and as they are sold. Many of the girls are orphans and all are either initially kidnapped or tricked into forced prostitution. The methods that the traffickers use to keep the girls include hard drugs, mind control, and both sexual and physical abuse.
