The film won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the Canadian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 55th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

Eight intellectual friends - four men and four women from the Department of History at the Université de Montréal - prepare to have dinner together. The ensuing conversations range from their professional lives to politics, but primarily concern their sexual exploits. The group has plans to gather at a secluded house for dinner. While the four men prepare the food and reflect on their promiscuity, the four women discuss their own affairs at a nearby gym. At the dinner table, conflicts soon arise when Dominique reveals that she herself has had affairs with two of the men there, one of whom is married to Louise (also present).

Survivant d'un accident d'ascenseur dans lequel sa fille périt, Paul Sneijder s’interroge sur son existence. Canne à la main, les séquelles de son accident sont encore visibles, mais ce dernier, dont il n'a aucun souvenir, l’empêche encore de rentrer dans un ascenseur et de rester enfermé. Il a besoin de réfléchir et de marcher, quoi de mieux que de promener des chiens. Sa vie privée n'est pas plus évidente avec une femme qui s’intéresse plus à sa carrière, à l'argent du procès et à l'avenir de ses deux fils, qu'à ce qu'il ressent. C'est ainsi que la vie de Paul va prendre une autre tournure.
