Wings of Courage is a 1995 American-French drama film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. The 40-minute picture was written by Annaud with Alain Godard. It was the first dramatic picture shot in the IMAX format, and the first 3-D IMAX fiction film.

The film is an account of the real-life story of early airmail pilot Henri Guillaumet (Craig Sheffer), whose small plane crashes in the South American Andes, forcing him to trek back to civilization on foot. Meanwhile, the story follows his family and friends at home, and their growing concern for him. Elizabeth McGovern, Val Kilmer and Tom Hulce also star.

Synopsis

Le 13 juin 1930, Henri Guillaumet, pilote de l'Aéropostale, est forcé d'atterrir dans la cordillère des Andes avec son Potez 25. Il est finalement sauvé après avoir marché en haute montagne, en plein hiver austral et sans équipement, durant cinq jours et quatre nuits.

A group of people celebrate overcoming their fear of flying by taking a flight together. They board a TransContinental Airlines Boeing 747-200, TransCon Flight 110, circling around Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. While the aircraft is cruising, a Polish gunman hijacks the flight and says that there is a chemical weapon filled with toxins in the cargo bay and show the detonator. The Polish hijacker goes to the cockpit and explains the plot to the captain and demands that he land at Seattle or a nearby airport. The captain says he can't land at Seattle due to bad weather and asks the hijacker to wait until the weather improves or use the bomb now. After getting into a scuffle, a British passenger Elliot (Jeffrey Nordling) - claiming to be an MI6 agent - and an FBI officer tie the Pole down. An aerospace engineer, Martin Messerman (Craig Sheffer), notices that Elliot had placed the detonator in his pocket. When asked to hand it over, he kills the Pole and the FBI agent. Elliot says to the captain that he's in charge now. After knocking the captain unconscious, he takes control of the plane and the passengers hostage. Martin attempts to warn about the hijack from an airphone but Elliot turns them all off.

In 1943, Captain Buzz Rickson (Steve McQueen) is an arrogant pilot in command of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber nicknamed The Body. While stationed in England during World War II, one of the bombing missions is aborted because clouds obscure all potential targets, but Rickson ignores the order to turn around and dives under the clouds. He completes the mission, at the cost of one of the bombers in his squadron and its entire crew. Rickson revels in the fighting and destruction; when he is assigned to drop propaganda leaflets, he makes his displeasure felt by buzzing the airfield. His commanding officer tolerates his repeated insubordination because he is the best pilot in the bomber group. Even so, when he asks the flight surgeon his opinion, the latter is uncertain whether Rickson is a hero or a psychopath.
