Millionaire playboy Fred White is attempting to make chorus girl Evelyn his latest conquest. Evelyn, on to Fred's scheming, has some scheming of her own, attempting to maneuver Fred into marriage. In a last ditch effort to get Evelyn into bed, Fred purchases a diamond bracelet, to which he has attached a key to the apartment he has leased as their potential love nest. When he shows the bracelet to his friend, Howard, the friend warns Fred that Evelyn is simply a gold-digger, only interested in getting him to marry her so that she can gain access to his money. The two make a bet. If Fred wins by getting her to be his kept woman, Howard has to pay for the bracelet and the cost of the apartment, and if Howard wins, by rejecting Fred's non-marital advances, Fred will owe Howard the same amount of money.

Giles est considéré comme un bon à rien par son père, le comte de Bateson, et il est d'ailleurs exclus de l'université pour avoir trop fait la fête. George Garrison se suicide après avoir été ruiné à la suite de conseils fallacieux que lui avait donnés Charles Wainwright, mais avant cela il demande à son fils Henry de le venger. Henry fait fortune dans l'Ouest, puis retourne à New York. Sous le nom d'Henry Thompson, il devient le protégé de Wainwright et tombe amoureux de la fille de celui-ci, Dallas. Il est élu maire de New York, avec le soutien de l'associé de Wainwright, le politicien Richard Horrigan. En retour, il est supposé signer le contrat liant la ville à la société de chemins de fer du financier. Henry refuse, et Wainwright et ses acolytes cherchent à le discréditer en ressortant une vieille accusation de meurtre, mais cette accusation tombe lorsque la supposée victime Joe Standing, un associé d'Henry, se présente bien vivant. Finalement, Henry accuse Wainwright d'avoir causé la mort de son père et d'avoir tenté de frauder aux dépens de la ville. Malgré la dénonciation de son père, Dallas proclame son amour pour Henry.
