The story is that of a lost semi-classical Thumri song, Lagat Karejwa ma Chot, Phool Gendwa na Maar, sung in 1935 by Rasoolan Bai, the well known singer from Varanasi. The film shows in detail that tawaifs were not mere sex workers, but were great artistes who contributed to music, dance, theatre, film and the Urdu literary tradition.
