Set in suburban south London in 1960, several themes run through the film, though the main storyline concerns the friendship between a young boy, David Wiseman (Sam Smith) who is the son of European Jewish immigrants, and his new next door neighbours, father and Dennis (Delroy Lindo) and young daughter Judy (Leonie Elliott) who are West Indian immigrants. The cement which binds their friendship is a deep love of cricket - but the ride is not always smooth. David finds himself falling for the indifferent Judy, but tensions between other families in the street, and a romantic relationship between Ruth Wiseman (Emily Woof) and Dennis, threaten to break apart the neighbourhood. It is one of the very few films related to the game of cricket. It was a failure at the box office. Some of the scenes were shot in Merchant Taylors School, Northwood.

Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is a successful Minneapolis defense attorney of the Ducksworth, Saver & Gross firm, who never loses a case but whose truculent courtroom antics have earned him no respect among his peers. After successfully defending a client resulting in his 30th win, Bombay is called into his boss's office to be congratulated, but also chastised for embarrassing the judge. Regardless, he celebrates by going out drinking and is subsequently arrested for drunken driving. Bombay is sentenced to community service by coaching the local "District 5" PeeWee hockey team. Across the Tracks is the story of two brothers who have gone very different ways in their past, and who now must learn to deal with each other again. Joe (Brad Pitt) is the older of the two. He is a good student and runner set on winning a track scholarship to Stanford University. Billy (Rick Schroder), on the other hand, is a delinquent involved in drugs and crime. As the story begins, he has just been released from reform school after serving time for a failed attempt at car theft. While Billy tries to make amends for his past life, it is not an easy task. Joe still holds a lot of resentment for what Billy has put their widowed mother (Carrie Snodgress) through, and feels that Billy's return is an unnecessary strain on their family.

The story begins in Rwanda where a football fanatic Dudu Kayenzi is teaching a group of children how to make an "organic football" using a UN condom, plastic bag and string. Meanwhile, his best friend and football prodigy Fabrice longs to pursue his ambition of becoming an association football legend and is seen breaking the local record for the most continuous football kick-ups. When Fabrice is offered the chance to audition for the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa, he fabricates a plan to sneak past his strict, wealthy parents with Dudu and Dudu's sister Beatrice. Beatrice wishes to become a doctor and find a cure for AIDS. Fabrice tries to express his love of football to his mother, but she simply replies "Africa doesn't need dreams, it needs to wake up".
