Synopsis
A.J. "Stoney" Stoneman (Peter Fonda), a grizzled sheep rancher from Medora, North Dakota, is tricked by Sheriff Hank Dawson (Keith Carradine) into taking a trip to see his daughter Kate Harper (Robin Deardan) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While there, Stoney ends up bonding with his grandson, Charles (Joseph Mazzello), whom he hadn't seen in nine years. Charles is also part of the plot to get Stoney help for a serious health issue. Charles tells Stoney his mother is in the hospital, so they leave for the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, Stoney finds out that Kate was only "in" the hospital to trick Stoney into having an examination. Stoney and Kate have a bout with words as Stoney is leaving and he collapses from an aneurysm, thereby causing him to be hospitalized. With the aid of his rancher pal, Shuck (Kris Kristofferson), Stoney escapes the hospital—with Charles in tow—for what becomes a life-changing adventure as Charles discovers his family roots and what it means to be a “wooly boy”.Actors

Kansas (Hopper) is a stunt coordinator in charge of horses on a western being shot in a small Peruvian village. Following a tragic incident on the set where an actor is killed in a stunt, Kansas decides to quit the movie business and stay in Peru with a local woman. Kansas thinks he has found paradise, but is soon called in to help in a bizarre incident: the Peruvian natives are "filming" their own movie with "cameras" made of sticks, and acting out real western movie violence, as they don't understand movie fakery. The film touches on the ideas of fiction versus reality, especially in regards to cinema. The movie is presented in a way that challenges the viewer's traditional cinematic understanding of storytelling, by presenting the story in a non-chronological fashion, and by including several devices typically only seen behind the scenes of filmmaking (rough edits and "scene missing" cards), and the use of jarring jump cuts.

In the Arizona desert, truck driver Martin "Rubber Duck" Penwald is passed by a woman in a Jaguar E-Type, which leads to an encounter with a sheriff's deputy. Proceeding on his way, Rubber Duck runs into fellow truck drivers Pig Pen/Love Machine and Spider Mike, when another "trucker" informs them over the C.B. that they are okay to increase their speed. The "trucker" turns out to be cold county Sheriff "Dirty Lyle" Wallace, a long-time nemesis of the Duck, who extorts them for $70 each.

Lucy (Sarah Bolger) is a self-confessed tomboy who gets on well with her father Chuck (James Marsden), but is frequently separated from him for months on end when he works in Canada. Her relationship with her mother Lainee (Claire Danes) is easy-going provided she keeps the house tidy. Lucy is even allowed to drive her mother's car, even though she is too young to apply for a license. Ex-convict Bobby Ogden (Peter Fonda) is trying to get his life straight and his career going as a country and western singer. Bobby shows off some of his tunes to Nashville star Garland Dupree (James Callahan). However, Dupree uses one his songs "Outlaw Blues" for himself with no credit to Bobby. Bobby confronts Dupree and when Dupree pulls a gun on him, he accidentally shoots himself in the ensuing struggle. Of course, Dupree tells everyone that Bobby shot him. Now Bobby's on the run, with only Dupree's recently fired back up singer Tina Waters (Susan Saint James) believing him. The pair flee together, as Bobby becomes an underground hero who is accepted as the man who actually wrote the hit, while being put on the law enforcement's most wanted list.
