American film critic, Roger Ebert, in his review stated that The Moderns is:
"sort of a source study for the Paris of Ernest Hemingway in the 1920s; it's a movie about the raw material he shaped into The Sun Also Rises and A Moveable Feast, and it also includes raw material for books by Gertrude Stein, Malcolm Cowley and Clifford Irving."
Synopsis
Nick Hart (Keith Carradine) is an expatriate American artist living in Paris among some of the great artists and writers of the time, including Ernest Hemingway (Kevin J. O'Connor), Gertrude Stein (Elsa Raven), and Alice B. Toklas (Ali Giron).Actors

After Mickey is released from a mental hospital, where his stories are perceived as lies, he goes back to Los Angeles in search of a woman named Eve. When he arrives at the bar that bears her name, he is immediately attracted to the new owner, a former call girl also named Eve. She tells Mickey she bought the bar after the old owner killed herself, "over some guy". Although Eve is also attracted to Mickey, she refuses to commit to any one man, confessing to radio talk show host Dr. Nancy Love that she ruined too many marriages to have one of her own. That night Eve rebuffs Mickey's advances and sleeps with the bartender who has a crush on her, while avoiding the married man she's been having an affair with.

Set in the year 1929 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Edgar Faldo is a young professor who decides to assemble a group of friends at his family mansion to discuss the topic of sex and its advantages. Edgar hires two young women to work as stenographers to record the daily debates that his friends discuss to scientifically study sex. Young, ambitious businessman Jeffrey Byron and his sexually frustrated wife Marianne, and older repair contractor "Lucky" Mann and his former B-movie actress wife Phyllis, are unhappily married and living in Montreal, Canada. After 15 years of marriage, Phyllis tells her husband that he is not the father of their daughter and that she conceived the child via relations with attractive co-actor Jack when he was away on Navy duty. Lucky is deeply shocked by this, leaving the house to reflect upon their relationship, ultimately going to the bar and drinking in excess. After coming home, Lucky rails at his wife for being unfaithful, and throws household items at her. Upon hearing his tirade, their teenage daughter Daisy leaves the house the very same night. Her absence intensifies their negative relations and Lucky and Phyllis decide to stay together on certain terms, namely sleeping in different rooms and not with one another or others. They receive a letter from Daisy in which she writes that they are not fit to be her parents and she never wants to see them again. Consequently, Lucky and Phyllis sell their house and travel to Montreal, Canada, where the letter was post-marked in order to find her (though the viewer only comes to know this later in the film).
