Private detectives Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy travel to Mexico City in pursuit of an infamous female larcenist named Hattie Blake (Carol Andrews), who is publicly known as ”Larceny Nell”. Meanwhile, an American sports promotor, Richard K. Muldoon (Ralph Sanford) meets with publicity man ”Hot Shot” Coleman (Richard Lane), and his assistant (Irving Gump) to discuss an upcoming bullfight featuring famed Spanish matador Don Sebastian. But when Muldoon sees a picture of the bullfighter he is enraged: Don Sebastian looks exactly like Laurel. Eight years before, Laurel and Hardy testified against Muldoon in a criminal case, and Muldoon was wrongfully convicted until the real criminal confessed and Muldoon was released but had during his time in prison lost his wife and business and had to start all over in Mexico.![Raggedy Rose](/imagesen/small/79127.jpg)

Stan and Ollie play door-to-door Christmas tree salesmen in California. They end up getting into an escalating feud with grumpy would-be customer James Finlayson. He, goaded by their repeated attempts to sell him a Christmas tree, destroys it with hedge-clippers. Laurel & Hardy retaliate by damaging the man's doorframe. He then goes to work on their clothes and this escalates with his home and their car being destroyed in the melee (after Finlayson has run out of Christmas trees to mangle). A police officer (Tiny Sandford) steps in to stop the fight (after vases are thrown out & smashed, and one hits him on the foot) and negotiates a peaceful resolution. Stan and Ollie give the homeowner a cigar as a peace offering. However, as the pair make their escape, the trick cigar promptly explodes in his face.![The Hoose-Gow](/imagesen/small/2104.jpg)

Stan and Ollie arrive as new inmates at a prison after apparently taking part in a hold-up raid, a raid they tell a prison officer they were only watching. After attempting to escape and giving themselves up after the officer shoots them in the seats of their pants they are sent to dig ditches with other convicts on work detail. After sitting down to eat at the officer's table and chopping down a tree being used as a watchtower, they accidentally puncture the radiator in the prison inspector's car with a pickaxe and then stupidly try to patch it with rice on the advice of another convict. The rice boils up and spews out after the engine is started. This starts a rice-throwing melee with the visiting governor and his party.
