Synopsis
Au sortir de prison, Joe Dennis, gangster repenti, est engagé dans un grand magasin dont le directeur recrute une partie de son personnel chez les anciens détenus afin d’aider à leur réinsertion professionnelle et morale. Joe épouse une vendeuse, Helen Roberts, qui par peur de le décevoir lui cache qu’elle est elle-même libérée sur parole, ce qui selon la loi américaine d’alors est un motif d’interdiction de mariage. Aussi fait-elle tout pour tenir cette union secrète. Quand Joe découvre la vérité, il revient auprès de ses anciens complices, avec lesquels il avait rompu, et se prépare à cambrioler le magasin. Mais Helen parvient à convaincre la bande de renoncer à son projet, en expliquant, craie en main au tableau noir, que « le crime ne paie pas ». Un enfant scellera bientôt l’amour d’Helen et de Joe, en présence de tous leurs amis réunis à la maternité.Actors

Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda) is an ex-convict who cannot get a break after being released from prison. He marries but is then wrongly convicted for a bank robbery in which six people are killed. He is sentenced to death by electrocution. On the eve of his execution a gun smuggled into the execution area enables him to escape. During the escape he unintentionally kills the prison chaplain. The chaplain was trying to convince Eddie that he has had a last minute pardon. This is because the body of the guilty bank robber and the getaway vehicle with the stolen money have just been recovered from a lake.

It is February 1929 in the city of Chicago, Joe (Tony Curtis) is an irresponsible jazz saxophone player, gambler and ladies' man; his friend Jerry (Jack Lemmon) is a sensible jazz double-bass player. They accidentally witness the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. When the gangsters, led by "Spats" Colombo (George Raft), spot them, the two run for their lives. Penniless and in a mad rush to get out of town, the two musicians take a job with Sweet Sue (Joan Shawlee) and her Society Syncopators, an all-female band headed to Miami. Disguised as women and renaming themselves Josephine and Daphne, they board a train with the band and their male manager, Bienstock. Before they board the train, Joe and Jerry notice Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), the band's vocalist and ukulele player.

En route to meet his fiancée, Katherine Grant (Sylvia Sidney), Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy) is arrested on flimsy circumstantial evidence for the kidnapping of a child. Gossip soon travels around the small town, growing more distorted through each retelling, until a mob gathers at the jail. When the resolute sheriff (Edward Ellis) refuses to give up his prisoner, the enraged townspeople burn down the building, two of them also throwing dynamite into the flames as they flee the scene. Unknown to anyone else there, the blast frees Wilson, but kills his little dog Rainbow, who had run in to comfort him in the cell.
